I have killed the kodaks here for 2 days now, using tracking to keep them all down. There have been periods where no kodiaks were in zone for up to an hour or two at a time. It's pretty clear to me the PHs for the large kodiak may sometimes be something else, I suspect the shadow wolves because as I killed kodiaks and their numbers decreased, the number of shadow wolves increased.
Killed Kodiaks and spiders to spawn their perspective named last night for 6 hours and nothing. I did notice that the respawn of the giant spiders and the Kodiaks is rather long, as I was able to clear all these mobs in the entire zone.
I found the 'a large kodiak' as a static spawn today at 690, 540, just NW of the 'Old Brewer's House' on Brewall's maps.
I had been killing around the map for a while, but don't remember killing in that spot, and no one else had been in the zone for a while. I thought he might be a roamer, but after watching him for about 5 minutes, I decided he must be static in that spot, so I killed him.
found it today after about 8ish hours or so of camping. found it at -335 +2176. it would pause here then venture out for a short time and head back to the same spot. One note - after so many hours I tracked some relevant npc's that we hadn't killed and found some mobs were stuck on rooves and in tree trunks. It spawned shortly after killing them.
Just popped at +760, +500, +5. northern part of zone, a bit NW from the Highpass Guards houses. Not sure if he stays static or if he roams, he sat there for roughly 10 minutes before I killed him.
Crap, I logged back into the game and this guy up and attacked me. I died twice, maybe 3 times before I stopped and looked him up. I was completely unprepared.
For having a non-descript name, those not familiar with this beast will most likely make some unfortunate assumptions when taking this monster on, like it's just another kodiak!
Fear cast from fthis mob cast is not AE directional, it's radial and has a large radius. Best way to contend with him is get a tank that has the 'Fearless Discipline' which is a lvl 40 disc for warriors, maybe level 50 for SK, unsure, but it's the ticket. All others expect to be sent a walk'n.
Key here is 'walk', remove sow/soe or any other speed travel buffs, set yourself to walk, then if, or when, you are feared, you will not go far. if you go to far and your tank is not properly equipped, then the fearless disc does not matter much as they will be dead from the melee this monster can put out.
Other than that, you can try pulling him to coves and other areas, but if you are feared and in melee range, does not matter if you don't run far, you will be summoned one by one to your death.
The upside to a failure with this mob is that you can outrun his summon's range as it's not 'zone wide' like seen with other mobs throughout Norrath.
Mob does see invis, but if you are one of the earth, Karana / Tunare and have not been marked KOS by Bears, then you should not get agro by simply running by the mob.
I have seen this bear spawn more times than any other named in the zone. I have seen him spawn in the far west of the zone (south of highpass zone), behind Darvin's house, to Greyhawk regimen. Possibly he has other spawn spots I am unaware of.
In the several encounters I have had with him, the Mounted Ursine Fang seems most common.
This guy popped on me behind Darvin Oggleby's house when I was waiting for the other named there. Started wacking then feared my mage before I knew what the hell was going on. LOL!
The fear makes this a tough fight. 3 boxing makes it a nightmare as everyone is running in fear most of the time. Best bet is to pull him to a 3 sided cove where there are walls to block you from running to far otherwise you will have your group spread out all over the countryside, hehe. That is what worked for me.
Monk strat: kill him while merc heals you. Merc will flip out on ae fear but will come back. Time your mends and impenetrable to absorb some of the damage and make sure you use purify to get rid of dot once during the fight to cut down on some of the damage. All things considered it's probably harder to merc than bonegrinder or festersting but not as hard as darkcoil.
Never tried this mob, but looking at the fear and DD/Dot... I'd say pet tank it! Slap a HoT on the pet, blast heal as necessary, and have the rest of the group on ranged dps. Alternatively you could use a good tank with all their fear resists (unless maxed maguc resist blocks the fear frequently?) and max burn.
85 Mage with EM7 84-Earth pet ... Chained RS.Rk.II pet, fired off all AA pets, Hp/Ac casted rune + Fortify Companion.
T5 Merc healer kept the pet up while I used 1st-Spire and TwinCast Rk.III to melt him down fast using all upper nukes and clicky nuke. Parse showed him dead in 62-seconds while total damage delivered to him averaged about 4700DPS.
AE seems to be directional. Had pets and merc in front of Kodiak while I was behind. His AE Fear only landed on me if he spun around to face me. Other than that, the merc was feared twice. Fired off my PR while merc was LD-Fear.
Best strat is to just melt him down fast, fast, fast. A wizzy from a distance would do wonders ... Just watch out as the bear summons.
Used a fear effect called "Blood Roar" and he also summons. Ate my merc tank and druid pretty fast before we realized he wasn't just another "weak" animal.
