I've just spent 5 hours in SK, and came out with 6 Head of Shen. 4 hours was spent finding the PH, but once the PH was found the heads were rolling in. Other comments are saying 36s respawn on the PH. I don't know if that was correct in the past, but I do know that it is not correct today. It is a 30 second respawn. I timed it 20+ times, it was always 30 seconds. The problem is most of the trash in the field is also on a 30s respawn timer. So you can no longer use the respawn time to determine who the PH is.
Mobs that I have seen on Shaman Ren`Rex's spawn cycle (Grisok spawns immediately on Ren`Rex's death) include: a bull elephant a lioness an elephant an elephant calf aviak egret centaur archer centaur charger centaur courser centaur sheltie Kurrpok Splitpaw
There are likely more mobs in this cycle, but these are the ones that I saw until I got 6 heads and left. Every one of these mobs spawned in the south east quadrant of the zone. All south of the undead spire, and east of the splitpaw.
Just now, on Rizlona, I was able to spawn him. I put a toon in SE area and a toon in NW area and killed everything until Shaman Lenrel Spawned. He spawned near the bandits east of the NK zone line. Then, for me, it went like this:
Shaman Lenrel > High Shaman Phido > Shaman Ren`Rex > High Shaman Grisok
Ishva Mal / Grisok cycle: Location: South Karana; central and south eastern area in a triangulum between Splitpaw lair, zone border east of it, and the hermit house. More than 20 spawn points do exist !
The Ishva Mal a Ishva Lteth gnoll Shaman Ren`Rex High Shaman Grisok Tesch Val Kadvem Kurrpok Splitpaw
Been trying this spawn cycle for 3 hours. The only spawns I've been getting are "The Ishva Mal", "a Ishva Lteth gnoll" and "an Ishva Lteth gnoll". Starting to think this spawn cycle is a bust.
Seems that two different cycles got mixed up the last time when I went after High Shaman Grisok as both have a respawn time of 36 seconds. The Ishva cycle seems to only spawn the Ishva gnolls:
- The Ishva Mal - an Ishva Lteth gnoll
Today I was helping a monk to spawn High Shaman Grisok and after hours of Ishva gnolls he or Ren`Rex did not spawn so I started killing different mobs and after I killed a centaur sheltie near the hermit house in the southeastern part of the zone Shaman Ren`Rex spawned 36 seconds later near the hermit house. He can also spawn further away from it at many locations. After the death of Shaman Ren`Rex High Shaman Grisok will spawn immediately without a delay. I continued killing mobs in this cycle and after High Shaman Grisok spawned a second time (this time without Ren`Rex) and got killed by me the cylce just stopped ! No further spawns, and I tracked down the whole zone.
Here is a list of some of the mobs that are definetly on a cycle with High Shaman Grisok:
centaur sheltie Shaman Ren`Rex High Shaman Grisok Kurrpok Splitpaw an elephant calf an elephant
Tesch Val Kadvem (not sure on this one but last year he spawned too during this cycle)
All of these mobs spawned in the southeastern part of the zone and as far west as to Splitpaw Lair (Infected Paw) and as far north as to the zombie spire. The Ishva gnolls do also only spawn and roam in this area but are on a different spawn cycle.
South Karana has pretty unique spawn cycles/tables that are still mysterious. Most of the common mobs like aviaks, lions and elephants can be part of many different spawn cycles. What matters is the duration of the respawn time after they get killed and where they spawn and roam. The name of the common mobs does not matter much as it does not show to which spawn cycle they do belong.
7am irl, and No one's in zone, figured good time to use tracking to nail PHs. Started by killing elephants, NW area of zone; also tracked any escaped gnolls + killed them as well. Shaman Renrel popped, just East of the Undead camp near NK zone. Killed him & ran south to look for High Shaman. Found Shaman Ren'Rex popped on track, East of Splitpaw. Killed him + waited. High Shaman Grisok popped on track, a bit East of Aviak tree. Killed him. Waited. Soon after, High Shaman Phido popped, just a bit NW of Aviak tree.
- Firmly believe that similar to the Hunter/Forager cycle in Trak's Teeth, the shaman are linked spawns, and nailing one in the cycle can set off spawn for the next one.
Killed Grisok a few times now Always right after killing ren Rex i either got another Ren Rex to spwna almost imediatly or Grisok spawned at about Neg 6402 neg 361. Ren rex was always closer to Paw almost directly north of the grisok location. Just my 2 copper now if only Phido would spawn.
Walked into South Karanas today on my monk, asked a tracker if anything was up. He said Shaman Ren'Rex was up, so I asked him to take him out. (He said Ren'Rex popped SE of paw.) So I stayed between hermit and KFC for 5 minutes and Grisok popped. Whole thing took 10 minutes.
Undead Cyclops isnt the PH for Phido either, because they were both on track so whoever is saying the Undead Cyclops is the PH for these guys, It isnt true, He has been seen up the same time as all the mobs so he is either a PH for all of em or none of em so stop having noobs chasing useless mobs..
The PH is Shaman Ren'Rex and the PH of Shaman Ren'Rex is a Undead Cyclopse. Once I killed the Undead Cyclopse the Shaman Ren'Rex popped right after I looted it then High Shaman Grisok popped right after i looted Shaman Ren'Rex. His LOC spawn point is -5600, -3100. FYI a Undead Cyclopse is also PH for Shaman Lenrel which is PH for High Shaman Phido.
Spent 6 hours looking for either High Shamen the previous day, with no luck. Today, I get up and get on, and start killing escaped Splitpaw Gnolls (and only these with the occasional shadow wolf for a shadow wolf pelt). About 30 min later, Shaman Ren'Rex spawns. I kill him, and High Shaman Grisok shows up on track shortly thereafter. So, I got Head of Shen. I go back to killing the escaped again, and Ren'Rex and Grisok spawn again, in the same way. Still no Phido...
The escaped gnolls seem to spawn in a few places: West and SouthWest parts of the zone, the SouthEast part, and I have consistently seen 1 escaped spawn in the North near the bridge.
Both times that Ren'Rex has spawned, it has been at or around loc: n4663, n426. Both times that Grisok has spawned, I have caught him wandering just south of the hermit house, heading West.
Just sit south of the hermit house, about halfway between it and the aviak tree, and kill everything that seems rare (escaped splitpaw gnolls) and named like Lenrel (obviously) and Grisok will eventually spawn. I was able to get him after about two hours.
Oh, and the best part is that he will aggro you even if you are of a much higher level than he is. I never even saw him and would have ran right past if he hadn't attacked me even though I am 53. Also, for those of you who are frustrated with this quest, just remember that the next headband (the purple) is a lot easier if you are high enough of level.
I don't see the CENTAUR COURSER mentioned anywhere : I was in the south of the zone and noticed that there was one Centaur Courser, also that this was the only 'Courser' centaur I had seen in this region so I decided to say hello.
Soon as he dropped to the floor an Undead Cyclops appeared on track. Soon as the Undead Cyclops fell, the Shaman Ren'Rex appeared on track, then as soon as I fell Ren'Rex, finally Grisok appeared on track.
The Centaur Courser appeared to be walking eastwards as if coming from the Aviak Town.
Roamed around SK on my bard, tracking for all 3 mobs for the monk headband quests. Killing escaped gnolls, etc. Started by the hermit, ran to the NW skele camp and killed skeles for Ghanex. I noticed he seemed to spawn independantly of the skeles when night fell. Not sure on that, but most of the time I killed the whole camp at once, and he spawned way before the other mobs.
Anyway, found Grisok at -6800, 0. Between the Hermit and KFC (birdcage, aviak town, etc) like other posts have said.
Still looking for Phido. Wish me luck, and good luck!
Just got finished getting my Heads. To get the PH's to spawn, I noticed that after I killed the undead cyclops, the regular cyclops, and the undead at -2185, -1566. I got both Shaman Ren Rex to spawn (the ph for Grisok), and High Shaman Lenrel, the ph for Phido. So I'm pretty sure the two different cyclops are the ph's for the ph's, heh. The undead at that location may or may not have anything to do with this, I put it in because this is the only thing else that I had killed at that time. Unfortunantely, I happened to kill the skelly's BOTH times that I got this to work so..... But for sure, the cyclops have something to do with these heads.
Here are my observations on this quest. First off, it is B*O*R*I*N*G!! I spent 10 hours running around South Karana, killing every escaped Splitpaw gnoll i could get my grubby hands on. High Shaman Phido was easy enough, i killed escaped splitpaws untill shaman Lenrel appeared on track. After hunting him down 3 times in a row (there were no escaped splitpaws or any of the other PHs on track ANYWHERE) High Shaman Phido spawned, and i chewed him up. (Note: There is no set /loc for these spawns. I went from NE corner of zone, to somewhere in the middle, to just west of the Stone Bridge for the Lenrel spawns. Then i had to track Phido to the SW corner of the zone). This took about 2 hours. Grisok was a PAIN! I spent the next 8hours on a whole-sale slaughter of SK. My monk friend and I killed everything that wasn't camped, and I was always checking tracking. If an escaped splitpaw was on track we went to him, pausing only to kill the unfortunate mobs that crossed our path. Finally, during a brief pause in the bloodshed, i spotted shaman Ren'rex on track. This was a huge shock because, by now, we thought we were doin something wrong. After tracking Ren'rex to a spot near the hermit hut (he was runnin, so no telling how close he spawned) we dispatched him. Immediately after he died High Shaman Grisok appeared on track. Grisok was standing pretty close to -6700, -1500. He was an easy fight, but then again everything in SK is an easy fight (except quest givers). I looted the head and handed it to the monk, we ran around somemore and She got her Robe of the Lost Circle.
In conclusion: Lenrel appears to be a PH or trigger for Phido, and Ren'rex IS a trigger for Grisok.

Based on all the posts, I hunted these guys using these two bits of most common observation:
-SE near hermit = Grisok & ren rek= his trigger -NW near undead = Phido & lenrel = possible trigger.
Basically my experience was this is accuracte. 3 for 3 times i killed ren rex, grisok spawned immeditely afterwards. I was slaying all escaped near hermit and to get them to spawn i was killing everything i could in the area.
I did the same thing in the NW. it took a LOT longer to see lenrel, and phido did not pop immediately afterwards. however 2 escaped did and a couple minutes after them phido spawned at pos1161, pos 2150.
i found grisok much more common and easy to spawn. in the same amount of time (roughly 4 to 6 hours total) i found 3 of him and ren rex and only 1 phido/lenrel.
On a sidenote I was told if you kill the monks they have like a 50/50 chance to drop the robe. but that seems pretty lame to me. I prefer doing the quests myself and after 25 hours camping raster (got him on 10am spawn), im decidcated to it heh.
I'm a lvl 37 rngr, who's been hunting these named gnolls for some time. I read earlier, someone thinks Shaman Lenrel is the ph for Grisok. They might be mistaken.( Dont burn me at the stake if i am ). I got him to pop twice, immediately after killing Shaman Ren Rex, within 5 minutes of each other. Thats right, Grisok popped twice within 5 minutes of the other. 90% of the time its in the Eastern part of the zone, near Hermit (approx). I assisted 3 monks within 15 minutes ( i was carrying one). Tryin to figure out pattern for Phido. I'll keep ya posted. Hope this helps )
been camping for 17hour straigh today, i entered sk this morning confident that i`ll be able to finish this quest, and i headed to undead ruins, to see it was camped, i ask the peoples there if i could kill ganex when he spawn but they gave me his head.
Next i began to roam the place, sending shout to see if anybody had them on track for two hour, when my ranger friend loged, we roamed the area for an hour then we got phido on track, second head on my list.
After we decided to camp the aviak knowing that he spawn aroud there so she got track on and we killed avocet. 10 hour later, 20 afk, 50 round around sk, one gix, 3 undead cyclops, another phido, one cyclop and one Mroon and still no grisok, my ranger need to log so i asked a guildmate druid to help me track him so we began to roam again the place (this time killing all in our way) 3-4 hour like this still not grisok.
I really intend to kill him next time but it seem another monk in the area camped him for two week and is still camping him now did not havve any luck too, i begin to hate starting competition with fellow monk, this grimok seen like a race for monk about who got the most ranger and druid friend, and this begin to get anoying, please verant make raster faster when i get to him please please please!!!
still tomorow i`ll try a last shot, if now you`ll see me up in ec auctioning: WTB brother shen`s head
Here's what I learned while hunting him. First of all, some basics on the rare spawn table in SK (as far as I and others have figured it out). On one table seem to be the following: escaped splitpaw gnoll, undead cyclops, ? cyclops, all the shamans (Lenrel, Ren'Rex, Grisok, Phido), all the nameds (like Grizzleknot and Quillmane). I'm probably missing some on this (I suspect elephant calves, but I may just be paranoid), but this is what I saw. There is no "trigger" for Grisok, but he is on this table and killing any one of these will cause another to spawn, which may or may not be Grisok. The shamans and rares seem to only spawn in specific areas of the zone, but the rest appear anywhere.
I found him south of the hermit's hut. In that area there are a cluster of rare spawns, one north of the hut, and at least one, maybe two, south of it. They all run on about 18.5 minute timers, although this varies a bit. When I tracked him, he was running east towards the aviak's tower, and fast. I didn't catch him til almost the aviak tower. Looking at what other people have posted, it seems like he can head in any direction from where he appears (as do all the other rares).
Just to comment on the Lenrel theory. I never saw Lenrel once. It's possible that someone may have killed him somewhere and I didn't know it, and then Grisok spawned, but he spawned, as expected by my timer, in the area south of the hermit hut. I really don't think Lenrel had anything to do with it.
Well I have seen a few mention that this mob , along with others , are hard to catch and finish bc of them being sowed. Heres a trick I have learned , it has worked with anything I have tried it with , when he starts running and you cant keep up for some reason just sit down , he will think you are an easy mark and come back for you . When he is in range stand back up and hit him , continue if needed til your able to keep up . Of course not always an option if you have to becareful with adds .
30th swifttail ( Iksar monk ) Just got my faction good enough with Qeynos to do these quests )
I was running south of the spires towards the Aviak village when I accidentally crossed his path. He aggro'd on me and began attacking. In self-defense I killed him. So, I do know that if you can just run close enough to him, he should attack you. That's one way to initiate the fight.
Oppss , meant in the last stages of battle while he is running away with not much health , if hes sowed its hard to keep up . Thats when sitting down will help , he comes back to you when your sitting wether 1 hp left or more, still will come back.
