got one for my 39 druid, very nice, dosn't save that much mana mostly just the spell slot, casting time is only 4 seconds which isn't that bad, great item, spent 10k although i proably could have waited to get it cheaper i was lazy and wanted it badly once i saw it
Was sitting in Bazaar and saw it for 2k =). Being a beastlord, can't use it (screenshot is correct, only ranger and druid) but have a nice gift for druid friend, that's for sure. Suprised me seeing as bazaar prices seem only to be going higher and higher... makes me dizzy at times. Only other one on market at the times was 10k, FYI.
I have this shield, and to be honest it's not actually that useful.
It doesn't really save much mana as ensnare only takes 35 and this takes much longer to cast (7 secs I think). In theory you could regain almost 35 mana by medding the extra tick (although in practice it won't be that simple...).
I thought it would be good to save the spell slot, but I find myself usually having ensnare memorised anyway when soloing, because if the first one is resisted I normally want to get the second one off quickly.
Now that my wis it at it's cap, and my disease and poison resists are lagging a bit, I am strongly tempted to swap this for a swamp spider mandible, and hopefully end up with some extra cash.
I use the Swamp Spider Mandible atm for the mana and (admittedly) the look. Even though Ensnare is only 35 mana, that can mean a lot when you find yourself in a rough spot with too many mobs. Being able to clicky Ensnare to keep them behind you is a great asset.
If I happen to get this as a drop, I will gladly use it ... but would I pay 13k for it? Not unless I win the EQ lotto and have extra money after upgrading other items. Don't look for the WIS add if you are maxxed, but 25 AC and 15 AGI may save yer butt as well... All IMHO of course, hehehe
EDIT: Also think about this as a twinkie item ... at level 35 +15 WIS and a clicky snare saving you valuable mana from your little 1k or so pool would be grand!
I have read quite a few of the comments here, and one missing use that I can think of is aggro kiting. I for one often kite, as its hard for me to find a group most times, so I am used to kiting. Aggro kiting basically is one person kiting a mob while keeping aggro from the people chasing the mob attacking. With this shield I was able to keep aggro from a chain casting 56 wizard, a hasted rogue backstabbing total between 400 and 900 per shot without crit, and a 58 beastlord plus pet. Best part about this? It was mana free, and let me switch ensare with another dot.
I bought this shield on Vazaelle for a mere 3k, was a very lucky buy as they rarely are seen in the bazaar and usually are listed at about 14-16k. I for one am very happy with it, and will never sell.
#REDACTED,
Posted:Jan 20 2003 at 3:06 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) lodi is easier to kill than this dragon and lodi sheld = 1000x better then this pos... no resists on a sheild is just sick, 14wis... who cares, no mana/hp... ewwww, if i want to not have to mem snare i just swap in my earing of woven bark for the length time it takes to rclick the snare.
The lodi shield is really nice, I have one. But I put it in my back slot because it is one of the best in the game for that slot for a druid. I'd much rather use the tanglewood shield in my secondary. Yah, resists would be nice, but i'll take what i can get....
i use this shield with elder vambs on sullen zek, really freaks people out, when i cast root, then click on this, then cast my dot, then click on elder vambs, looks like i dont have a cast delay. get 4 spells off in about 20 seconds, kicks major butt=)
Elder Spiritualist Vambraces are arm slot, mana free (right click) Drones of Doom. Druid only. Drop in KC which is located in the middle of DL. Got mine while fighting in Right Court Yard, (RCY) but don't remember what droped them. Got some AC, no other stats though.
Get an earing of woven bark (1k max on Brell server) and a CC shield (maybe 2k) and you get the same affect for a lot less price - and no big difference in mana. I know, i know - earing only has snare - not ensare - but if you group (as i do a lot) the duration of snare always outlasts the life of the mob we wackin anyway.
Shield is not bad - but don't pay an arm and a leg for it
no you don't the click on the earign is SNARE -last 3.5 minutes This is ENSNARE - last 14 minutes and best shield today under 10k i can thik of is Tae EW: 35 ac wis 8 mn 50 hp 50 tota lresists 49
For quad kiting druids, 35 mana x 4 adds up to 117 mana, jk, actually 140 mana. I can see how this sheild would be nice. However looks are almost everything, and i like my CC shield. But, if i find one at a bargain i will snatch it up
It says Classes above are Beastlord, ranger, Druid. Then is lists the Classes which are all non Bestlord. then the screen shot is also listing No Beastlord.
As a beastlord I would love this since we dont get a root or snare at all. But Im sure its just my pipe dream :)
This is quite a useful shield. As others have pointed out, it can free up a spell slot and has some useful stat's, despite it's "newbie" kite shield look.
I "2-box" (multi-playing), usually a Monk and Druid, and initially had some questions about its' usefuleness and reliability. Well...
Ensnare lasts 8 minutes, compared to Snare's 2 minutes (ala Earring of Woven Bark, etc.), is a 1.75 second cast time, 2.25 recast time, and uses about 35 mana... the savings of mana from a Mana Preservation item is negligable, and the short cast-time renders Spell Haste focus items useless... THIS shield, however, has a 4.0 second cast time, and is ofcourse INSTANT recast!
The resist rates are identical to the Druid-cast variety... around one in 30 or so, despite it's "parsed" resistance of Magic +25 (supposedly, rather high- but *we* know better!).
The Tanglewood Shield's cast-time EQUALS that of the cast/recast of the SPELL, AND it has the identical resist rate of the spell! Not many right-clickable items exist in EQ which have a cast-time which is equal to the cast/recast of a given spell!
Players rely on right-click effects to conserve mana, normally, but all-too-often- a *bad pull* or *add/repop* drives us oom, or close to it... and when you're oom, yer OOM! This shield, like the Clerics' Velious quest Leg Plates, has saved many a LOM and/or OOM group, by ensnaring that last fleeing MOB.
For a grouping Druid, this is (imho) about the best tradable shield in the game. Maybe Solo Druids or purists would scoff at the 4-second cast time and lack of HP and mana, and that the effect is only secondary to the Druid's epic Effect "Nature's Wrath"- and one could even poke fun of its' "plain jane" looks, but I have to say, it was always on my list of "dream gear"- and having paid only 10k for it, it is thankfully now in the "dream come true" category.
Here's my take on the benefit of mana free snare. Sure it's only 35 mana, but it has other uses.
First, you get a free spell slot. Always nice to be able to expand your repertiore (sp?).
Second, clickable items don't have a recast time. Nor are they affected by recast time. So you can use this item JUST after casting a spell without having to wait for your spell gems to refresh. I've been known, in XP groups to Root with my Warden Symbol, Dot, snare, Dot in quick succession. by timing my spells appropriately.
I just got one of these bad boys in a trade. 2k, black ice sleeves, black ice legs, and a CC shield. i think i came out a winner. i tried this for the first time and it rocks. So what if ensnare is only 35mana? that's 35mana you save for other more important things. The stats are incredible. i mean 14wis? that freed up some slots so i can get resist gear and stay well above 200wis. The only drawback, and it's a small one, is that it looks just like an average shield. it's a wolf in sheeps clothing.
