Is this used in a quest? Had it drop 3 times off the Muglwump and I just hate leaving magical items on a corpse, especially if there's a quest involved :)
As far as fishing not being productive in any way , i wonder if you are aware that there are several items used for the various Trades that can only be obtained by Fishing for them ? Saltwater Seaweed for Human Cultural Smithing Temper to name but one (incedentally the very reason why i spent several hours fishing in Eruds Crossing while killing Willowwisps for pp:) )
Stacks of fish sell for approx. 6GP practically everywhere (modified by CHA and faction) so fishing is definitely NOT unproductive. Many of the different types of fish you catch are used in tradeskill recipes so if nobody has fished in the zone and sold to merchants recently, you have to do it yourself. You also get stuff like fish scales (for Enduring Breath), rusty daggers, old sandals, and a few other things you can sell for small coin. If you have a tacklebox you can make lures and flys and such that modify your fishing skill to make it even more productive.

Funny thing is, fishing is the only tradeskill that pays for itself, literally. The poles cost a few plat over the time you will have them (if they break often) and the bait costs 2cp each. You will lose your bait once in a while, but other then that only a fish catch will count towards loss of the bait. Other stuff is pure profit. Other tradeskills (smithing and jewelcraft come to mind) are barely profitable if you sell to PCs. So fishing is a good way to kill some time while you med up or wait on that boat.
If all you others want an easy to get fishing pole with 2% fishing mod, go kill Algthin(sp?) in Tox forest, he's a level 5 mob and drops the pole every time, its what I've been using since level 22 and it has only broken one time on me, fishing at 151 now
Tinkered fishing poles, a Collapsable Fishing Pole, now have a skill mod of 5%. Also tinkered bait, Animated Bait, now has a skill mob of 3%. Combine for a skill mod of 8%. Gnomes with beginner tinkering skill can knock out both of these, trival. Cost in parts for the pole is about 6p, bait 3cp.
Just add this to your gnomish fishing pole and bait. Carry this one in your off hand while you fish and get a total of +10%. (Anyone on Torv who wants to buy a gnomish fishing pole, just send a /tell to Aziraphale. :)
I got this item off of Muglwump on the first kill, dropped this and a med. level gem. He used DoT and Slow spell at the same time about every 10 seconds. Unfortately no mages were in zone to take it. I'm guessing it's for a quest as most of the higher end mob no drop stuff is for quest, but since i'm troll i can't go into erudin. Hope some one figures this out soon, i'm gonna take my gnome mage to erudin to see if the quest is possible to multi quest. I killed The Mighty Bear Paw 4 times, never dropped anything but have heard of him dropping a belt that's used for a quest. Also killed the Cave Bat Lord 4 times but only dropped a word and a gem.
My Mage (who is only halfway to level 25, so can't get this item just yet) is a follower of Prexuz and predominately uses the water elemental pet. A fishing pole would be a great roleplaying item just to keep in theme. Although it would be a *better* roleplaying item if it could actually be used to fish with.
How about since the initial release? Perhaps you are not using the pole correctly. They are sold in quite a few places, mostly near docks and city water supplies. You need bait to fish as well as a pole, and some zones allow you to catch special local fish, such as the Timorous Tuna in Timorous Deep. You can also catch fish scales, rusty daggers, crappy shoes, and actual, edible fish. I would not call fishing productive, but it gives you something to do while waiting for the boat.
You can fish with it. I was using it as a fishing pole for my mage. That is until I realized that, like normal fishing pole, it might break. And knowing my luck with fishing poles, it prolly would (I broke 3 poles in about 30 minutes one night with my warior). So I really didn't want to risk it.
BUT it can be used to fish with, so that is relly cool
Does your comment mean this doesn't work as a fishing pole? If so, I'm kind of dissapointed... I mean, seriously how hard could it be to let people who get this be able to fish with it :-P and it would add so much to the coolness of the item *sigh* oh well, not like I'm able to use it anyways (or loot it, but I'll not get into that right now ;-) )
ah a stein of moggok so that is what holds the beer i keep nocking over. i must just break it cuz i dont have one yet :( oh well ill get one soon so i can drink my beer to
