Look at it this way, If your a Paladin, quest the sword, or dont quest it. The choice is yours. Im questing mine regardless of what anyone says. Yes I have better weapons, and I've bought Armor, and Weapons from the Bazaar to, No harm in that, right?
I started EQ back in 2000 played till the end of 2004. In 4 years I still didnt have my Epic, because I was to busy Qeusting anything and everything, that a High Elf Paladin could do.
I stayed at lvl 52 for about 2 years, waiting for my turn at the books, well my turn never came, I gave up trying to get the book havles, and started grouping again.
By this time all my friends were way higher lvl then me, so I made new friends and got to lvl 55 and quested the Nature's Defender, shortly after that I quit EQ.
I was gone for 3 years, I have been back now for 3 months, and have come to realize now they have 1.5 and 2.0 Epics.
I have started lvling again, have went from 55 to 61 in a short time, but now im holding for more AA's, I dont want to get into big big game till I have better gear and stats. 3 year gap ( needs upgrade LOL).
Have also started wooking again on my Epic, and I must say it seems to be easier now then what I remember it used to be. Maybe because I see much larger
and harder quest to do with way better stats,
I'm almost finished with FA,Just need to do turn ins, my faction with DWK is Ally, I have Miragul's Head, and Robe, Soulfire, and Ghoulbane.
I need Tainted Breastplate, in Hate, and the Sword from the Keeper of the Tombs in the Hole,<<--- Once i have those items I can then do turn ins for my FD.
And if one of my friends gets married, and i am asked to go to the wedding, I'll be standing there with my FD, while everyone else goes on about how awsome that sword looks, Chances are you'll be the only Paladin there with your Epic FD glowing flame, yeah to me its still the best looking (sword) in the game.

I haven't seen any post here mention it but there is now a paladin 1.5 pre-quest you can do instead of this to get on your way to the 1.5 and 2.0 which are incredible plus it is a quest which should appeal to all those who seek honor and pride as well as being less reliant on permacamped dragons for drops so it should be more suited to those who don't wanna wait a week for a dragon to spawn and hope their book drops sure someone will have something bad to say but hey I am doing the prequest to accomplish something instead of my death and dissapointment I got from this quest

I saw someone ooc the book of scale in the baz on the Stromm server. I offered him 50K for it. He said it is worth 200K at least -,-. I said .. well I don't have that much ..guess I will just have to kill the dragons myself. HE said... "Good luck, I have them perma camped" Stinkin rotten that is what it is. 1000 different 'ifs' can go here. none of them can make this right. Any half way decently equiped group can take out a kunark dragon these days. every pally on every server should have this book. There is only one reason they do not. Permacampers. They are a HUGE problem. /petition SOE to make the book of scale NO DROP so the perma camping pigs get the heck off of out epic!!!! and...OMG DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK!!!! Our epic should be a mark of pride and personal accomplishment. If you buy the book, there is no pride, only shame and a lie. I will get my epic myself, or not at all.

Just my experience with this part of the epic. the Soulfire and Ghoulbane parts are relatively easy but there is that Book of Scale part that bogs ya down cause of the dragon farmers. Best bet is to buy the book in baz. Then the second trouble with this is the turn in in sky. Props to Isumondedpeepl for helping me with this. Good necro who summoned me to the 4th isle. easiest way to do it. Then there is faction with Inte Akera. mine wasnt high enough I found out the hard way so went to sky for nothing. To fix faction easily there is a necro with 100hps max in Toxxulia forest near the docks of the river on a 5 min timer, kill him then work on fishing for 1.5 at same time. To check faction with deepwater knights simply go into erudin to the deepwater paladin guild bottom floor con the paladin chick Brenda i think her name is not sure. But when you con looks upon you warmly then your good to go.

just fyi i have just recieved this weapon on Prexus server and im ABSOLUTLY IN LOVE WITH IT, i have a rune lance of gryme on my pally too, which is 37dmg 32dly and 3 disease dmg

now granted it has stats too and whatnot but the epic hits for around 240 constant, maxed str, and procs for 110 + lvl 63 proc of 150,

whereas the lance hits for around 260 - 280 and just procs for 150, and hits a lil faster. i dunno bout you guys but with 80% haste, when grped, doesnt really matter what the dly is basically, and this is just the avenger that i like more =P cant wait for defender

I got a question, i currently have an argent protector 40/51 or something close to that. Shout i do my epic, or waite till i get good PoP swords?

well i guess i waited to long im a 56 pally and dont really want to delevell can i still do the quest for fa i do want one. 1 thing i did do wrong was stuck with 1hs the whole time 2hs is 0
but thats not a big deal can still have fun training 2hs .lol

You guys are arguing about nothing. If someone wants to buy a weapon and not deal with doing the epic, that's a fine decision. They should not feel bad or any other way. This is a game. On the other hand, if someone does put the hours and hours of time and effort into getting their epic, they should be comended. There's no need to put other people down to try and make yourself feel better. If you don't want it, don't get it. If you do, want it, that's great too. I will certainly do my best to get mine. To me there is no greater feeling than finally finishing that long **** quest you've been working on for the last god knows how long. Will I be proud when I have it, you're darn right! It's an ultra rare epic because it's a very difficult quest. Will I feel better than those who chose not to get it? No. Because this is a game. And I, nore anyone for that matter, should give a ratz **** how someone else wants to play it. =)

P.S. I got some ice cream, you got no ice cream.. da da da da da! =) LOL

For those that find reward in the prestige, honor and accomplishment that comes from completing a difficult epic quest, more power to them, but for those limited in time, patience, or:
1. ability to get raids going that are successful
2. getting into guilds that will yield good raids
3. getting those books from the raids to drop
4. paying 1500p for the sword which is hard to get
5. getting a sword (even the Fiery Defender) which is in comparison dated, yes has good stats and good proc and can bash, but inferior damage/delay
6. time to do a difficult quest
7. would rather gain xp and loot from not doing a quest and regular gaming
I think it would be a better use of time, in my humble opinion, to save up a mere 2000p (saw it for 1000p on Rodcet Nife) and get the Worn Shai`din Naginata (37damage 45 delay +6str +6sta +2 wis 7 damage bonus) and a FBSS, or get the Reaver (40 damage 40 attack delay, 4500p). you would get these weapons faster, deal out more damage at an equal or faster rate, and not have to put up with endless amounts of frustration and work to complete the quest. Sure quests are rewarding in and of themselves, take it from one who has quested an entire suit of armor, but there is something to be said from good old fashioned killing and looting and buying.
