I have a Crystalline Torque and I was wondering if it's really worth it. If it saves you around 300mana, should I wear it over a 6+ all stats talisman or even a 4+ all stats talisman? It seems to me that I would be losing a lot of stats by wearing this item just to get mana preservation 3.
Nice neck item for a shaman as well. AC is so so but to save on slows and buffs is a sweet benefit to me. Even with good wisdom/mana pool, more mana for me = more slows or buffs for you before I canni out.
HP, Mana and resists on the talismans are nice, but mana preservation III is even nicer.
I have it on my paladin, using it over pieces with more HP and more mana. I don't use spells full time like a pure caster does, and still the effect is noticable. Depending on your mana pool it saves you 200-400 mana, enough for 1 extra spell and by saving the mana and not adding it, it also reduces your med time. A neck piece with 200 pure mana would also mean that you have to med 200 mana more to get from oom to FM, mana preservation means you get more mana to cast and the same med time from oom to FM (or anything in between). As long as you don't have mana preservation in another slot, I'd use it over any other neckpiece, especially as caster but also as hybrid.
"bob, i think we need one more thing with mana preservation 3 on it.. our current selection is too... limiting.." "well.... there's this one item a bunch of tanks have with a tonnn of AC on it, it would be perfect!" "great idea! the swirly colors are going away.. i'm gonna drop some more acid now =))))"
At the lvl it would take to get this (provided you don't just buy it) the ac is crap for a tank. 12ac just isn't that much. If this dropped, no self-respecting warrior would ever want this. The decent AC makes it perfect for hybrids, but 12ac pretty still crap for them too (not that they should pass up the MP 3, but...)

It depends on the maximum mana of a character. I've heard of characters with 6k mana at higher levels, so for one of those guys, it would effectively "give" them 600 extra mana.
It 'effectively' adds about 300 mana or thereabouts to your total mana pool. ie. over the course of spending your total mana at 60, this is how much you will save, in effect making it seem like you have about 300 mana more in total. Follow the trail of clues...
This item now has the much sought after Mana Preservation III. Any idea how this effects its value? I can't seem to get a response on a PC for this item...

One second here... I see this drops off of Meljemor. Now, it must also drop somewhere else and I'm trying to puzzle out where.
The reason I say this is because I was doing some banking with my old retired Druid (retired long before Velious) and saw this among the things in the bank. I remember it vaguely, that high AC neck that had no other redeeming value. I'd almost swear I bought it in Halas of all places from a vendor there a couple of years back but I'm uncertain. Something there is tweaking a memory though.
Now, to be fair, it *is* possible I looted it with my main and passed it off to the Druid but frankly I cannot remember doing so. More to the point, at 12AC and no stats or saves I wouldn't have bothered. Perhaps I had it in mind for twink bait but I can't see it. A simple spider collar is better overall and I've got three of those rotting in the bank already. Further, I've killed Mel before but don't recall any neckpiece dropping and I would have gotten a chuckle out of this one if it did.
I guess what I am asking is: Where else might this have come from? Now that it has an across the board mana cost reduction on it, it is pretty damn nice actually and if there is another source people might want to know about it.
this is the highest ac neck item that is droppable aside from the warrior only Glimmering Mithril Torque. Spider fur choker is 10 AC +7 Str +7 vsCold +7 vsPos 0.00 Wt. Crystalline Torque doesn't have any stats though. What I'm trying to understand is that other slots can go right into the 30's with droppable items, why bother with the 2ac when you can get those other nice stats?
So far you folks have talked about a lot of stuff, except the mob and location where this drops. Velks has a lot of area and the debate about which class is better at what doesn't belong in an item description post area.

They are not at all bad at the Taunt skill itself, and while their spells are not the greatest, they are cheap and megataunt quite well. Combine that with a damage shield and you got one awesome megataunting SK :)
Just wanted to add something here, Technically , no a Dmg shield does not add agro, But in certain situations, it can cause agro on the person who casts it.. Try playing a druid, then have a tank pull, hit it a few times, then have the tank stop atacking.... then Dmg sheild the tank, after a fwe hits on the tank, the mob will agro the druid because the dmg shield counts as dmg dealt by the druid, basically like a DoT. If you dont believe me, try it out)
I agree whole heartedly, in my experiance SK's are THE only class(havent grouped to much with rangers) that regularly is able to keep taunt off while i am in full attck. mode. The rest i have to remove the taunt myself with FD or stop attacking and just kick a few rounds.
well I am one of those that believed for the longest time that ac/hp was king, and would always save you on the battle field...I went to level 26 on my de sk believing that hype. Then one day I decided to get some gear together and try str(for hardeerr hits) and dex(to hit more often) gear and see the difference. I experimented with this solo, against the bard in Nek forest. One thing I noticed, was that I actually killed the bard quicker, and took less damage, when I had my str/dex gear on. I haven't looked back since, I have built my sk on the theory of dealing enough damage to win the fight quicker, than having higher ac/hp to fight longer. I truly didn't notice any real change in the damage of the hits themselves, I took less damage in the fights because my opponent went critical and ran sooner. Of course, things may be different for the monk class. As for the taunting off, I group regularily with a well equipped monk several levels higher than me, and with my spells and damage, I have no problem taunting off of him..warriors are not the "masters" of taunt as most think, the sk spells(and rangers' for that matter) are more capable of creating the extra aggro needed..especailly if the taunt skill is used just after a succesful spell cast(like a drain or dot)
Andari Belladonna 34 sk on Fennin Ro "You have not yet begun to die.."
This may be true below level 45-50... But once you hit the 50s, the mobs have so many hit points, that you must have AC to handle the dmg they dish out.
You will laugh when you finally decide to try the AC route again at higher levels, when a mob it trying HARD to hit you, and missing 10 times in a row.
I am a 60 shaman now. But I believed for along time that resists were the best way to go for me. I recently made changes that added 200 AC to my stats. The difference is amazing. There are still times that I must have resists, but those times are almost always on raids against dragons.
AC is where you want to be post 50 for normal groups.

You might miss your stats from that station earing or 4int 4str earing but DAMN 12ac is WAY better than ANY earing i have seen. And in case you didn't know this is because ac is way more important than stats when it comes to any melee.
About the "ac is way more important then any other stat" comment. Recently I have been experimenting with STR/Hp gear...catch is I disregard AC all together. Up side: Do more dmg (79 max/hit vs. 68 max/hit with ac/hp gear <with a sages battle staff>) Dont have to worry about the weight camp=more loot=more money. Down side: Well I dont have one yet...some would say losing 40+ AC would make mobs hit you A LOT harder. So every now and then I switch to my AC/Hp gear....Only thing I noticed was I hit for less. I seem to take the same high dmg from mobs and I seem to get hit about the same. I am only level 30 and have heard everything will change from here on out....I was told this at 26 when I started my STR/Hp gear....I am doing fine with my Str/hp gear but I keep my AC/hp gear just incase it begins to get rough.
Actually I've seen hard hitting monks get torn up because they don't normally have high ac and they hit so hard the warrior in the group can't taunt off them. Just my 2cp.
Iksar Monks are only overshadowed by Iksar warriors when it comes to AC. At 52, with no planar or quest armor, my monk has 1001 AC, unbuffed. Does my damage output exceed a warriors? /shrug. I wield a T-Staff and CoF. Warriors usually have more HP than me though. With a full compliment of buffs I reach 3000 hp, and 1047 AC. The magical number for any melee players should be 1100 ac. Anything higher than that is not worth the gains. This item I am sure would wield over 20 AC on my monk... VERY nice.
