*chuckle* at anyone who claims shaman's don't melee. Been an active primary shaman for over 2 years - and I spend most of my time meleeing. This thing would make a neat toy for anyone not in a position to get better (ie Righteousness). Epic is more of a raid tool than a soloing/grouping thing.

Between FT items, c3, canna5/torpor - why would i med? I need to wait on dot's to finish to re-apply so I can't chain nuke, slow lasts 4 minutes til I need to re-apply, malo lasts longer than any fight does.
#REDACTED, Posted: Jun 27 2002 at 6:58 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Yes i have this, but as a Shaman i could care less about my dps or about the proc, when do i ever tank anything? my hp and ac are only used for canni and when i get summoned. Shaman should NEVER be a tank in any group, unless you are PLing. anyway, the ratio is nice, should make it rogue useable too, with some str and dex hehe
RE: who cares

About priest melee...

Look at clerics now. With high atk buffs they dish out some decent melee damage. The other day a cleric in my raid group was meleeing and proccing her Hammer of Souls (level 60 summon) like crazy while landing 2200 crit nukes. I was surprised at how much clerics have changed over the past 3 years.

So, even though priests may not be the best with melee skills, they do have them and could be put to good use, some day, some time.

QUOTE: "Shaman should NEVER be a tank". <P>

That is your opinion, my friend. If melee isn't your play style, so be it, but to arbitrarily exclude that play style as a viable option is extremely one sided. You are saying, in essense, that your play style is the only style worth pursuing. I personally prefer to get my hands dirty. I summon pet, slow/DoT mob, and commence to getting knee deep in his ***. I love to melee. And to get back on track with this original thread, the Rune Etched Icewurm Fang is a great tool to do just that. If you can get one, DO IT!
RE: who cares
# Aug 16 2002 at 12:20 PM Rating: Excellent
So your telling me, if you have a chanter, bard, cleric, Warrior and Rogue, you would just sit there with C3, FoM, Bard Mana song no need to sit and med, then you are a crappy *** Shaman! I melee and cannibalize in between pokes of the weapon, hardly finding the need to sit and cannibalize, and if you have a good cleric they will CeH ya when you get down to 50-60% in HP's. If you don't melee your wasting your offensive abilities, Shaman have the best offensive stats of all caster classes, Hell I've been in groups where my atk is higher than some rangers!

No, we don't tank but we do melee. In high level encounters, often, you have to be in melee range to cast on a mob. If you are standing there casting and sit to med, you are going to die. You may as well melee and add to the damage pool. I see no reason to stand there and do nothing. I melee, usually hasted with celerity and can do some serious damage with how often this bad boy procs. Its not as good as the epic other than ratio but it is very nice.

Agree, kinda. Some don't tank. I do, not main tank like you may think, but as crowd control. I slow the adds and pull aggro take a few hits cause yes shamans do have pretty good AC and can take it then root it. Other classes that can't take the hits as well root then say "back up."
Woot!

I just got one of these on the nameless for 7k. Well worth it!!!!As for tanking Shamans can tank when we need to and more so with this. If my casteror healer has a mob on them im not gonna sit there and canni get in there take the hits for them hell i even heal when im getting wacked sure you may die, But die the noble death not the one of a running shaman:( Nothing is worse than running you will only die alone. I have died many time but i have saved many others. So tank good shamans and if your a runner then speed be yours as will a lonely death.

With Harnessing of Spirit and Dexterity at level 53 i can make my dex buff of over 100pts now my base is not very high but you add 100 dex and this sucker procs like a mother. The other Great advantage is that my piercing and offence are now maxed with this puppy. It hits SO fast that if you HoS and dex buff yourself and have either chanter or your own haste or even better chanter and bard haste i can proc this puppy about 5 times a fight now that is 405pts of dammage in addition to the fact that you also str yourself with HoS and a str buff to make me hit in the 40's at times. This is SOOO sweet. And yes the epic is better stats but not better DPS.

Sadly, you'll find when you get to level 53 (or 49 when you actually can get the spell) that Harness of Spirit doesn't stack with Dex or Strength. Doesn't stack with Tal of Kragg either, for what it's worth.

In the original posters defense the HoS did stack with Strength and Dexterity. They nerfed it so that people wouldn't max out their str and dex just from shammy buffs. Kind of sucks but I don't use any where near the amount of mana I used to )

I was in Permaforst hunting the first corridor with a group of like minded people all 15-19 lvls when a lvl 60 Troll shaman walks up and offers to group buff everyone etc - seeing me a low level shaman (he was waiting for a Vox raid or something) he says "take your pick i've got a shield or a spear you can have"
I was using FS warhammer at the time and he helpfully pointed out that our epic is a spear and guess what I plumped for the spear and he handed me this over...

Needless to say I was totally gobsmacked (god only knows what he had in range slot!) and my guild have effectionatly called me a "tank" ever since - if you are as lucky as me to get one of these note that the procs kicks in at lvl 35...

I've got this baby for my shaman (45). Had to spent all my money.
Did hunt HGs in RM to get few pp back. Just buffed myself, made pet. Str and haste only for pet. Pulled with scourge, rooted near pet and slowed with torgor. And now the fun part: melee with the fang. Could take 4 or 5 down before i had to med. :-)

I need new pants after reading the stats on this weapon. is this an EPIC? I have a lvl 9 shaman. And this makes me want to play him like 10 times more. because everyone knows Clerics do not Melee this almost makes a shaman a melee capable class. its disgusting, I love it.

Where Does this Drop?
# Aug 31 2001 at 9:34 AM Rating: Decent
Okay, from the information below, it drops off an uncommon spawn, Oracle Bloodstorm. However, I can't seem to find the area where he spawns. Does anyone know? Is it by the arena, or over by Tormax?

Any help would be appreciated.

I went along on a raid to help a friend gather items for the 9th ring quest. If you go straight instead of taking the right at neg200, 1000. The area is around neg600, 1400.

Some of the giants here are casters. My first time here I died because I aggroed one, most probably the Oracle. Two grav fluxes and a couple hits later and I was naked in thurgadin.

As a 45th shaman at the time, my mana was best spent as main healer in the caster group. They seem to draw a bit of hate and we all know how many hit points they tend to have.

I have seen groups as small as two pulling from this area, and I think that the oracle isn't too far in, but bring your friends, the higher level the better, as usual.

Also, for when you get your epic, this can go into your range slot. Make sure that the raid you go on is need before greed, or you may be on a lot of raids to get your fang.

Good Luck!

Well, this weapon had been on my wish list for quite a while, but had finally resigned myself to the fact that I'd have to make due with my Slime 'poon til I finished my SoF.

Fast-forward a few months to a couple nights ago, where I was in Kael with a group of +50 guildies getting the blood for our Mage's (7th?) shawl quest. We were in a part that doesn't drop the corroded chain, so I was just there for the fun, when all of a sudden our MLer says 'Holy S**t!!'. I'm not paying much attention because I'm constantly canning to keep my mana up, but he comes over and hands me, to my shock and delight, THE FANG. I say 'Holy S**t!!' I had completely put this weapon out of my mind, figuring I'd never see it, and here it was. I tried it out a bit, and felt like I was on Alac (which I wasn't) because the thing is so DAMNED FAST.

Well, we are back in there the next night, in the same place (because the Mage's combined failed with the blood he got the night before), when all of a sudden we are fighting not one, but TWO mobs that are holding this same damned spear! We grab one for our other +50 shaman, then raffle off the other to the others in our group (damned lore tag!). Completely blew me away, though, cuz I thought that these were so rare. Don't know if this was a patch bug or not, but really don't care.

Now I was a firm believer that at my level, Shammies just don't melee anymore. If you are in a group, you are slowing and buffing (and hopefully not healing), and canning anytime you can. When I solo, I have a pet, I slow, and I stand back and bracer them to death. But with this weapon, now I'm not so sure. In Kael, after I slowed, I tried running up to melee, and I was fighting faster without Alac than the pets were. The 81 DD is cold-based, so gets resisted by Kael mobs (and most other Velious mobs), but is great for distracting the casting of the mobs (especially the gaters in Kael). I wasn't doing it a lot, but was sure nice to be able to actually do that again, instead of being a complete joke. I still think that if you are in a group, though, your main mission is to slow, alac if you don't have a chanter, and keep your mana going.

One more anectodal story: After Kael last night, I get a call from a Druid friend that she has the Spec Courier on track in CoM, and offers to TP me over to get it, just her and me. It's the last report I need, so we pop on over there and she plays tank (I know, pretty scary). Luckily, all easy mobs around the courier. Anyway, I have my pet up and she is tanking, so I slow and start bracering. I realize at that point that with the bracer being so slow, I might as well try out my UBER spear. I start in on the mobs with her and my pet, and, well... WOW. It dishes out damage for those simpler mobs in CoM, and the DD doesn't get resisted, so it rocked. :) I found that I actually needed to keep Alac OFF me, otherwise my stam started dropping too fast. Heh fast weapon. :)

Anyway, sorry for the epic-length post, but I just wanted to say that this weapon is great, and don't listen to all those that say that we can never and should never tank.

Very nice find, makes me hope for the next time we have to do the ring with the guild.
I too disagree on the never mellee statement - I have never melleed so much as in the 40's. Since I cannibalize all the time. And you can attack and cannibalize at the same time. Unless you get a riposte you don't get interrupted. My piercing is maxed for the first time in 20 levels, and I started working on 2HB again for extra damage against resisting mobs.

Nifty story, nice to see another dedicated person get theirs =).

I use one of these on my shaman as well, i have to say that its nothing but awesome. You can be your own 3rd dot if you like, and it has indeed saved me from a few scrapes now where i know i woulda been a goner had it not been for that extra dmg.

Man oh man!

I want everyone to know about last night's venture in to Kael (our Guild is Protectors of Light on Xegony), talking about exciting! I wanted to "document" this last night but I was too tired (and still too excited) to do so. :o)

Basically there were 10 to 12 of us pulling at a fairly constant rate...great conversation and fellowship time, but unaventful to say the least as far as danger is concerned. No matter to me because the faction adjustment was good enough in my opinion since I am going Dorf/Dragon and I was with guild mates.

It started getting late and people slowly left until there were the following...

Rathalas, Seredi, Naketa, Tonja, Grieg and myself.

As we pulled various spawns and named mobs etc. Rathalas informed me of an incredible rare/random drop Shaman Spear that dropped earlier that evening prior to me logging on. It was painful to listen to because the stats were so amazing!

Tonja (who was pulling like a veteran Monk *Grin*) pulled a named mob called "Oracle Bloodstorm" (Level around 51 to 54 I believe). It isn't thirty seconds into the fight and all of a sudden we are surrounded by about seven or eight other giants!

Needless to say the wheels began to fall off pretty quick! *Grin* But with the people being the excellent players they are, no one panicked. Three or four of us were about to die however, so an Evac was neccessary. Two seconds after it is called for, Rathalas says...

"HEY! Isn't that the Shaman Spear!?"

LOADING PLEASE WAIT...

YOU HAVE ENTERED (Some Evac Place *Grin*)

I say...

"AAAAAGGGGGHHHHHHHHHH!!!!"

"What? THE Shaman Spear!? Are you serious!?"

Unbelievably Rathalas and the group say...

"Hurry! Lets get back there and get Grish that Spear!"

Well, as the tears begin to stream from my ever so happy eyes I type something to the effect of...

"I LOVE YOU GUYS! :o)" Hehehehe.

We TP to GD (Well, all of us but Rathalas...that is another story *Grin*), Zone to EW, and then back into Kael.

Rathalas "Soft Mists" us and we sprint like we have "Spirit of the hyperactive Gazzelle" (Rumored to be included in Luclin expansion *Grin*) to our spot deep in the bowels of the Giant City. (Hehehe, that sounded good, couldnt resist. Would give exact loc but I was summoned by guild memeber...first time, which was wierd but neat).

Tonja sneaks around (like a veteran Rogue) and all of a sudden says...

"I see Oracle Bloodstorm!!"

I say "WOHOOO!"

Grieg Conjures some Earthen Strengthend Mortified Floating Uber Goo pet, whom I will affectionately call "Poo" and the group springs to action!

I make a puppy, and through more tears streaming down my cheeks declare it will be Gararab's finest moment!

"Sic em puppy, bitses an scratchus Oracle Bloodstorm tus death!" *Grin*

It isn't 30 seconds into, what will go down in the annals of PoL History as "Round 2", that right as Oracle Bloodstorm is about to die...

Rathalas says...

"GATING! PLEASE STUN!!"

Oracle Bloodstorm gates!

I say...

"AAAAGGGGHHHHH!!!"

***Interesting Side Bar: Right before Oracle Bloodstorm gated I had landed 2,400 hit points worth of DoTs on him...and he was still selected as my target.

In come five or six more giants and the wheels are falling off again! Just as the Evac is called for a second time Oracle Bloodstorm is cleared as my selected target and we receive faction adjustment message.

I declare...

"WAIT! HE IS DEAD! HE IS DEAD! ANYONE SEE HIS BODY!?"

As everyone's hit point bar loses its red tint and becomes grey...

**Tonja has looted a Rune Etched Icewurm Fang**

LOADING PLEASE WAIT...

There you have it, as told by Grishnack the Mystic, Senior Apprentice in Grieg's School of Looting (more on that later *Grin*) Apprentice Herald and Story Teller and very happy member of the excellent guild know as...

THE PROTECTORS OF LIGHT!

*Grin*

HAIL THE PROTECTORS!

Take care and thanks for an awesome evening Guys!

I can, and do Melee solo with this.
Slow, Disease Dot, Pet, Melee, DD to finish if needed,
With Haste and Regrowth on I average 2000k dmg with this, Atk is 186. Only loose 2 bubs health on average.
Damage Output is unreal, I can melee aggro mobs off tanks sometimes with this with no spells cast.
And yes, I only melee in groups if there is another shaman or the stuff is easy enough that I don't have to sit, sit, sit.

The reason you can get a weapon like this in an easy location is because its a shaman weapon. Its the same reason that there used to be a 60dam 40 dly staff that only int casters could use. You can give casters insane weapons and not overpower them. Mostly because casters are pathetic meleers. Its like giving a melee a 32k nuke but not giving them mana to cast it.

Was on a 40+ guild raid last night just killing giants for faction. I'm medding after rebuffing my group, when a guildie walks up to me and puts something in my trade window, and says 'This just dropped off that giant, SHM only, and you're the only Shaman here'. I say 'cool' and click Trade. Then I look at it. HOLY KICK **** SPEAR BATMAN! I immediately toss my Ebon War Spear in my Range slot, kicking out the Dull Wooden Spear.

This thing is sinfully fast, especially with Alacrity (that I just scribed and memmed because I dinged 44 minutes before), it provides a good deal more mana, AND it has a decent proc?! Talk about being in the right place at the right time...

a little info on shaman's melee abilities. No we can't duel weild, but it doesn't take long to throw a slow and a dot on a mob. Now I am a little spoiled in the fact my wife is a chantress and i always have clarity, but still i have an 853 attack at level 47 and the occasional bash on casting mobs interupts their casting. So lets review...slowed? yes.. doted? yes.. take out mid to upper 30's dmg and stun mobs? yes.. above 80 mana for next fight? yes
