I kept clearing out the caves for about 60 min, 0 drops so i decided to test out that island theory. took alittle, jeeze they are slow moving down there. Once the owlbears took over the islands I had 24 Wailing Substance in 11 min.

ok, this is something i found out, the substances only drop at the islands where the grimlings take over in hollowshade. they drop rate IS FASTER when the entire zone isn't taken by owlbears, so you make it how the owlbears control the island, then distroy the other camp of owlbears, let the wolfs take that over, once that is done then farm all you want, when you are ready to get shreiking substances, let the wolfs take over, go to the fort kill the big daddy wolf to have the zone respawn, kill the grimly chiefton, and don't let owlbears take over, wait until the wolfs come to take over, let them, they distroy other wolfs, and you will get your substances faster... although the war takes a little time, it's well worth it in my option. MUCH faster drops

The drop rate was the same for me regardless of weather the owlbears controlled everything or not.

Reading further in this thread there are quite a few supporting the idea that the drop rate is higher on the south islands.

I personally have run the war event numerous times (but not for smithing purposes) and have not noticed this, doesn't mean it isn't true.

I have almost certainly seen wailing substance on owlbears anywhere they are found though, which many posts here verify. However if someone is truly interesting in farming owlbears and recording some stats (we'd need to know how long to get 20 wailing substance in a specific mob cluster to even begin to assume a pattern for the drop I would think) then we'd love to see such info posted.

i have been gathering both substances to get a full set of shadowscream armor and agree that when you trigger the war and kill mobs on the beaches it is much much faster to get the drops. unfortunately i hadnt been timing it but i did end up with full stacks of substance when hunting there as opposed to almost nothing and wanting to kill myself when hunting the other parts of the zone.

As already mentioned I farmed 40+ of these off the Bears in the islands, including Gathers, Ravangers, Lookouts, basicly any owlbear in the island area.

I have cleared the Owlbear Cave many, many, times and never gotten this stuff from any of the listed mobs. I have seen it drop from the ones in PC, but I would never consider it to be a "COMMON" drop from any of them. The only mobs I've ever gotten it commonly from were the Owlbears that inhabit the islands to the south in Hollowshade Moor. They drop it quite frequently.

Confirmed this drops off Yelloweyes about 1 out of 6 times. Cleared the cave a few times with my mage and got about 5 drops of these.

The shrieking and waling substances will only drop in one place that i have seen in hallowshade moor. The islands to the south of the zone are normaly inhabbited by grimlings. However during the hollow shade war it is possible for either the owl bears or the sonic wolves to take over this camp. If you farm these mobs (either the wolves or the bears) from these islands while they control them you will find the drop rate is roughly 1 for every ten killed. In addition it is fairly easy to control the war to force either mob to spawn, so you can collect which item you need. There have been several very good posts on controling and starting the war so will save myself a long and laborous post. Good hunting.

I have looted Wailing Substance from owlbears inhabiting the caves to the east, half way up the map.

Smithing. This is used ot make Humming Orbs, which are required to make Shadowscream armor. Shadowscream armor is a common path to getting to 250 in smithing.
The trick

The trick is to get either the Owlbears or Wolves in control of the islands. Thats the only place in zone i've seen the substances drop
Only seen these in PC

I have only seen these drop from Owlbears in PC. I have killed the ones in Hollowshade and Grimmling and I have never seen any of these, even the spawned ones involved in the hollowshade war in all 3 areas.

Has this changed recently? (I hope so)
