vengeance 1 is pretty well useless. it only increases attack by 5. its the same thing as a bp with 5 str on it... and most have more. the ONLY reason anyone prefers vengeance over str, is when their str is maxed. if you have been playing EQ long enough to max your str to 305, then you surely have better gear anyhow. so in either of the two extremes, you are better off with a fr1gg1n barbed ringmail, over this. i saw someone asking 17k for this, in bazaar. boy is that rediculous... you could get a Tae Ew bp for that price. if this bp costs more than 3k, it is NOT worth it.
While I agree that this is worth nowhere close to a Tae Ew chest, vengeance I is certainly worth more then 5 str. While str raises your visable attack number, it doesn't not have a significant effect on damage. All that a higher str does in terms of damage is increase your maximum hit (by str/10). Strength does NOT increase your average hit at all. Items that give +attack do not increase your maximum hit (that is based on Strength and weapon skill), but rather increase the chance that you hit for a higher number from your damage table. Vengeance I is the same as having an offense skill 5 points higher. Like most stats, the benefit from one piece of armor is small, it is when you get that benefit on lots of pieces of armor that it means something.
Looking just at the Vengeance I, you overlook the rest of the stats. This item would give your more hp the barbed ringmail, slightly more ac, has a decent amount of mana, and even has resists. It now has a recomended level of 50 on it though, and that should tank the price pretty quick. With Tae Ew selling under 10k now, I figure this is worth 5-7k. Nice for a mid 40's lev char.
I think both of you guys are right and wrong, in a way. Vengeance I is 5 raw ATK. That would bring you 7-8 total ATK after the adjustment. So, counting the adjusted, let's look at this as an 8 ATK boost. 8 STR does not equal 8 ATK. STR:ATK diminishes the higher your STR. In addition, it's a lot easier to max your STR than to get max worn ATK (250 raw worn attack, including Avatar, Vengeance, and worn AoB items). If given the choice between gaining 8 ATK and 8 STR, I'd take 8 ATK every day of the week, and twice on Sunday.
That being said, Vengeance is just Vengeance. Don't try to compare it to STR, or offensive skills. As to how your ATK affects your damage, it's situational. A good rule of thumb is that 10 ATK (adjusted, not raw from an item) will net you approximately 1% to your DPS, on average.
Very good points. Melee classes should max their STR of course, but that doesn't at all reduce the value of raw ATK any more than STA reduces the value of raw HP. People who are foolish enough to look at the two as "competing" should probably just let someone else dress them before raids....
Is this effect stackable with, say, Ranger atk buffs?
