Classes: The Druid

Druids - a powerful outdoor class. With the triple ability to heal, inflict direct damage and cast damage over time, druids are a popular solo class, as well as popular in a group. They are also a travelling class, given both sow and teleportation abilities.

How should you play your druid to make the best use of his abilities? What are the best solo strategies? How should the druid be played within a group? What spells are the most and least useful? What skills should you develop?

Post your strategies on how to best play and develop the Druid and read, rate and comment on what others have to say.

Wizard or Druid?

Hello

I am thinking of starting to play EQ, but im not sure if I'm going to make a wizard or a druid.
I'am a EQ virgin and havn't even bought the game yet. I've read about the classes i was most intrested in and decided to make a wizard or a druid. Now to the point:
Can someone tell me about these classes compared to eachother?
ex: solo gaming, their roles while playing in a group, if they are popular in groups?, difficulty of the class, fun / boring (your oppinion) and other things that may be important to know while making this choice.

Thanks in advance!

First of all -- Let me welcome you to the world of everquest! *grins* Be warned that it will, most likely, be the beginning of a new addiction for you. *giggles*

Now then... I'm not sure if you're looking to play just for the end-game stuff/raids/etc or if you're wanting to roleplay. If it's the latter, be sure to create your character on the Firiona Vie server and feel free to send a /tell to Sanjah, my drakkin druid. ^^

I've not ever played a Wizard, though having wizard friends I've learned the biggest thing about the wizzies is that they have a TON of nuke spells. Seriously, their spells really are some of the best hitting spells as far as damage goes. lol.

Druids on the other hand are actually considered one of the "healing" classes. We have heals, buffs, DoTs (damage over time spells), Direct damage spells, etc. Most of the best druid spells can only be used in outdoor zones. Which can be slightly annoying at times, especially if you're not paying attention to which spells you have loaded. lol.

Umm.. overall, it is definitely possible to solo with a druid. A lot of players use what is called 'kiting' where you grab up a few mobs, cast dots or aoes on them and then run around in a circle while they follow you but are too slow to catch up and hit you ;)

Other druids, while soloing, use what's called the root and rot method -- keep the monster rooted while casting dots and direct damage spells on them at a safe distance away so you don't get hit.

When in groups, the DoTs come in handy, and you'll most likely be asked to keep damage shields on your groupmates and you might even be the primary healer. If there is a cleric in your group as well, then you might only have to emergency heal, etc.

Being a druid is a lot of fun. Of course, I am also an avid RPer -- so it has been a great help in developing my character. *smiles*

If you have any other questions on being a druid, roleplaying or everquest in general - feel free to ask and i'll help as much as i can!

Is the above reply for real?

Those aren't anywhere near the efficient ways to solo as a druid...

Wizards are nukers, pure and simple. Druids can do direct damage, damage over time, buff, debuff (basically weaken a mob), heal and fill in other capacities (roots, snares, etc.).

If you like to solo, druids are by far the better option, though no longer the best option in the game. In addition to kiting and root rotting, which aren't the most efficient ways, there's such a thing called "quad kiting" that you can do at various points in the game very efficiently, as well as solo by charming pets, etc. There's a lot of diversity there.

Druids can and do find groups, at least as of the last time I played. The best way to find a group is join an active guild. Roles in a group can vary: you can be the healer, a back up healer/utility person (debuffing, occasional nuking, etc.) and damage dealer. Druids have direct damage spells that are just below a wizard's, though mages have equally good (and in some ways better) direct damage spells. But, mages have pets and druids have dots.

Druids have lots of good buffs for groups. Generally, people prefer cleric hp buffs, but druids have a good hp buff line too. Druids also have a thorn line, which does damage to a mob any time it hits your character (or whoever you casted it on). Druids also have a decent str line, etc.

We have probably the best snare line in the game, becuase it's cheap mana and lasts a long time and slows the mobs run speed down. Our root spells aren't bad either. Also, druids have run speed buffs and levitate, etc.

Druids have a lot more diversity and can still nuke fairly well. Wizards nuke far better, but they'd bore me in this game. There are lots of druids, not that many wizards and the reasons for that - after reading all of this - is fairly obvious.

First off I know that this is an old post but with the new progression server comming online I thought I would add my 2cp since (unlike the other 2 posts) I have played both a druid and wizzy and both are 80+.

First off wizzys are the best DD class in the game which the other 2 posts mentioned but druids nukes are no where near the power of a wizzy. Well let me reword that. Druids can match the power of a wizzy but they have to cast 3 nukes to equil one wizzy. That being said wizzys can do 2 main things with are nuking and porting (not talking about the spell line with snares and so on).

Druids can do much much more including charming, nuking, DoTs, ports, heals and tracking. Now those all sound great compaired to a wizzy but let me break these down some. Yes druid can charm but about 90% of the time a charmed pet for a druid is death. Charms dont last long (aside from DC which is only good in the lvl 60 range)but the big problem is without a good way to debuff the rarly last the entire 7 mins, usually its more like 2 or 3 mins. Nuking well read the above. DoTs are great for soloing, NOT for grouping until your target is a raid mob. Mobs should be dead in good exp groups before your DoT has time to run its course. Exp groups are all about fast kills so nukes are the way to go. Healing, yes druids can heal and are the second best healers in the game (not even close shamans), but there heals take a ton of mana and are usually slow casting. On top of that inorder to keep a group alive in later game content first you must dump a ton of AAs into healing, second you have to have a great group with a BL, Chanter, Bard or Shaman in it. Without slows a druid can not keep up with heals. For instance in the low 70's you will prob hit up MPG (older content) mobs there quad for 850s, newer content at the same lvl mobs tripple for 1500s. Point being at the same lvl druids heals does 3k (without AAs 6k with) and takes 4secs to go off. Hard to keep up with that. Tracking is imo the most usefull skill in the game and it just rocks.

Group wise you will find that when your guilded it will not be hard for eighter class to find groups. Without a guild lol good luck finding a group with any class you chose to play (just the way eq is now days).

Raiding, wizzys are by far wanted more than druids. Druids just cant come close to the dps of a wizzy. Oh and your other skills sorry but in a raid dps is the only reason your there.

Soloing well it all depends on your play style. Druids can solo safer than wizzys, wizzys need more room to solo but druids take a lot more time to kill a mob. In my option wizzys are the better soloer. Wizzys are better at quading and with beam and instant cast nukes they can run through mobs fast, but there is a down side. Once there mana is gone there is a lot of down time. Druids with root/rot can pritty much go non stop. I personnaly dont recomend quading witha a druid. Takes to much mana to burn down the mobs. You will find that if you dont nuke a rooted mob the root will not break early often. I have had as much as 6 (didnt want to go higher) mobs at a time with root/rot. Root and dot one go pull another and so on. This does run through your mana fast but can safly be done if your looking to show off or just to impress yourself.

Druids do have one great skill that wizzys dont. They are one of the best PLers in the game. There not the best (see monk) but there very very good.
