Classes: The Cleric

Clerics -- the premier healer in the game. A popular class for any group, the cleric brings the ability to heal the party and keep you from dying, and can even bring you back from death at higher levels.

What is the best way to play a cleric? Can a cleric be soloed, and if so how? How should you play a cleric in a group? What spells are the best ones to buy and develop? what skills should a cleric concentrate on? What items should you seek out?

Post your strategies on how to best play and develop the Cleric and read, rate and comment on what others have to say.

Uh........no. A well equipped rogue with good AA's can be matched DPS wize by perhaps a zerker and at high levels most definitely a Necro, but not a cleric, not if all are similar equipped and AA'd. The exception to this would be fighting undead, where cleric/necro have built-in advantages.

A rogue first strike hits like a nuke. At 64 usual backstab first strikes range from 500 up to over 2000. The max I've had was a double for 2825 two nights ago. This is with only 12 AA's and a Death's Maw Dagger. With an Epic 2.0 ........schwow.

On the other hand, I like to mix it up with my cleric, and the 70 cleric I usually run with has always been a Battle Cleric for our group, but we run with a drood to that can keep him alive if he gets in trouble and throws some fun DS type stuff on him. Gratz on finding a fun way to play your class.

i am relativly new to everquest 2 months. i have a lvl57 cleric.to me the trem battle cleric is more in the perseption of the player. i like to think of my self as a battle cleric cause i run into the frey doing what ever damage i can and heal my crew while doing it . i dont sit back on the side lines unless that is what is needed. 9 times out of 10 the only toon in front of me is the MT . to me that is a battle cleric. i am still working on the solo end but has been difficalt.

The simple point is :) in the low end game clerics can tank but in the high-end they get abused :) i love the trem Battle cleric but in the high end if you grab argo it is " loading" :) if you want to go in and get your nose drity ;) more power to you but your job is to keep the group alive :) if your group has to wait for you to med cause you were " mixing it up" your cutting into your own exp ;) And no one is going to want a battle cleric thay have to wait on all the time :) Imo... lol add 35 cleric to my list i am 2 lazy ;)

As has been mentioned before, it really depends on the person behind the cleric and their abilities under fire. The last time I posted on this thread I believe my cleric was in his 50s and now that he has hit 73, my opinion has not changed at all. We have no right to snuff out another person's dream of becoming a "battle cleric" and ruin their attempt to have fun with their roleplaying game. If this person raises his cleric up and learns how to handle his group and swing his hammer... then great! He is enjoying one of the many ways to play the Cleric class in EverQuest.

Also by the time they reach the higher levels, an experienced battle cleric should know exactly what their job is and will know by then how to multi-task and perform both functions without causing the group any downtime. I, personally, will always swing my hammer as long as I have one in my inventory or can summon one. My character is a reflection of my own personality and therefore that is the only way that I know how to play him. He is a part of me and to ignore his "battle cleric" nature is to be someone I'm not. My groups come to expect it of me and I have come to expect it from myself. It's a challenge and especially with the new TSS spells that are out, it's fun. That's what this game is supposed to be about, is it not?

Well as for being a battle cleric it is possible to do this IMHO get a good wep I kinda like the hammer that drops in MPG get a few DS pots and throw on your Ward for a defence proc I have taken agro from the tank many a time this way and was just fine I can take a few hits and still heal but all I play is a cleric so I know how to play my class. have a HoT rdy and a quik heal all set. well thats what I do anyways. I realy love to solo highbornes in Veks and I also toy around in a few plains. I do go to Arcstone when I fell brave but thats more Root-DoT-run for my life kinda thing then wack the mob at like 12-15% left I realy only solo undead great to use the summoned hammer and maby get the hammer of the sun from SSRA for the clicky DoT well thats my 2C

This thread started about 1.5 years ago. Since then, things have changed, in a good way for clerics who like to melee. The ward line of (proc damage shield) buffs made solo/tanking dps reasonable, and more recently, a spell called vow of valor was added, in TSS. It lets you get heealed by a proc, that also adds more dps.

A well geared cleric can now solo reasonably well, and can tank in content below their gear.

So, while battle cleric is now a much more reasonable goal, you're still not a tank, and still will tank worse than a ranger, or monk, to say nothing of a real tank.

Well Id have to say I somewhat disagree with the cleric's cant be tanks idea only because I know a cleric or two that ive seen steal aggro from tanks and hold it. I questioned the cleric on why he was trying to do this he said simply "Im a Dwarf it's in me blood" from that point on my cleric's build changed I went for ac and sacrificed a lil bit of wis of mana on gear and at lower levels I jumped headlong into battle with the melee classes BUT! I must stress that in doing this first you must find the proper group build for this to be benificial, like having a shammie or druid to assist heal. 2 your casting skills may be a lil bit low when you get higher level since you didnt sit back and cast alot. 3 use procking weapons summoned hammers or aug a weapon of your choice preferably with some kind of lifetap or poison/disease proc as more than a few mobs resist them less.4 aug your gear with as much mana regen and ft as you can this will offset the the sacrifice for ac .5 Carry a backpack full of Potions the higest for your lvl pass a few to the tank for hs own nerves he can hot himself when he thinks he needs it and save you mana ds pots help too. know what your tanks hp are know when its time to back off and Ch you goof up to many times and your group will end your fun and tell you to sit your butt down . well these are my lil pointers take them for what there worth if you doubt there benifit try it and see if you dont have more fun than sitting on a mount watching everyone else play the game .

i still tank.

what changes with each new expantion is the places that you can tank untill you get the new gear and the new AA.

i am now just under 14k hp and 2700 ac self buffed. when a mob is slowed i can off tank just fine, if it isn't slowed, i have the tools to stay alive until it is. can't tell you how many times i have been able to save the group by drawing aggro, pulling the mob away and rooting it.

there are many things to being a battle cleric. it isn't just swinging your hammer. it is doing whatever is needed, using all the tools at your disposle. some clerics just sit on a horse and heal, nuke here and there. that puts me to sleep.

when the puller says 2+ incoiming, i am out front ready to root one, stun it, whatever. anything to buy the rest of the group time to slow, mez whatever.

that is a battle cleric, one that jumps in and does more than just sit and heal.
