This page is a list of words from in-game and from Tolkien's books that we we know, and their English translations. Assume that all words below are Elvish unless (noted) otherwise.
There were a number of different ways of writing Elvish but all used the Tengwar alphabet. Each different "mode" involved slightly different assignments to the phonetic values of the letters and differences in the use of vowels but the spoken language was universal.
The following list of words were initially gleaned from the appendices at the back of The Return of the King, then expanded slowly from references and mentions throughout all the histories of Middle-earth. In Quenya each of the letters of the Tengwar alphabet had a name, much as Greek (alpha, beta, gamma, etc), and each name had a meaning. Where the word is a letter-name we include the number of the rune in parentheses.
You will notice that multiple words are assigned the same meaning. This is because multiple languages are represented and, where we are sure which one it is, we indicate so.
