How are you all finding it? Graphical bugs aside, which is to be expected with a new engine, I'm finding it better than both Brotherhood and Revelations and on par with Assassin's Creed 2.

It's certainly a lot easier to die because you cannot rely on counter-kills (which are incredibly hard to pull off if you're surrounded) to bail your *** out of each fight. You need to be constantly on your toes in a fight because if you only focus on the enemies around you you're liable to not notice the squad of redcoats down the road prepping a musket volley your way which will either kill you outright or severely wound you.
"Magic" medicine to heal you mid-fight is gone too. Counter-kills are not gone, they have just been HEAVILY modified. If you hit the parry button at the right moment time slows down and you get the opportunity to either Disarm, Throw, or attempt a counter kill. 8/10 times a counter kill will fail, it depends on the enemy type you're engaging. Depending on the tool you have set you also get the option to use it to start a killstreak combo - parrying an attack and using a rope dart to yank an enemy into a tomahawk-clothesline is a thing of beauty!

The story is good and does a good job remaining impartial considering the setting, if you come into this expecting a bombastic two-finger salute against the British then you might be disappointed. Connor, whilst nowhere near the charisma of Ezio Auditore holds his own and is at times an interesting character. Naval battles are insanely good and easily the best side-game the series has seen thus far.

I am only at Sequence 9 so far, I suspect there are 12 in total so I am nearing the end but have enjoyed it all the same. There are some really good plot developments that happen rather early that completely threw me.
Lucy was an Abstergo double-agent which is why Juno took control of Desmond's body to kill her at the end of Brotherhood.
BIG SPOILER: You spend the first 4 sequences playing as Haytham Kenway, Connor's father who comes to America to find the vault left by the first civilization. After amassing a small group of allies and assassinating a corrupt British Colonial Officer he is revealed to actually be a Templar. Did not see that coming at all.

How are you all finding it so far?

I'm of the controversial opinion that the first game was the best. Steadily lost interest with each entry; I just barely managed to slog through Brotherhood, and I don't think I can motivate myself for Revelations. So ACIII will have to wait until it's half-off or more before I give it a look.

I'm hoping that it's radically different than the others, but the early impressions that I've read don't seem to suggest that that's the case.

Maybe it's because I've been using the Gamestop sword and the Tomahawk before that, but I've found that combat is rarely difficult. I suppose if you have very slow reaction times to the obvious warning triangles you might have a hard time with it. Some of the stronger enemies can't be killed outright by counter-killing, but that's what the break defense button is for. If you can't manage that, you can always run a few paces, turn around and shoot them, or throw down a smoke bomb, and just stab them. Honestly, I've found the combat to only be difficult in comparison to the earlier games. Compared to other action titles, it's painfully easy. It's so easy in fact, that I usually don't bother trying to be stealthy unless the mission requires it. It's just simpler to kill everyone and go on about my business. I received a message today while playing that I'm in the top 10% worldwide for kills, so I suppose not everyone goes with my approach, but it works for me.

I am rather enjoying the Aquila missions, but ever since I fully upgraded it, those aren't very hard either. It's a good thing I enjoy exploring the frontier so much, or I might have grown bored by now. The missions that take place during the present with Desmond are, while simple, my favorite part of the game right now, but that's because of the storyline, not the mechanics.

When I heard that it was set during the Revolutionary War, there was one thing I knew I absolutely didn't want to see.

Under no circumstance did I want to see this as a "Red Coats are Templars!" The entire series has been about the idea that Templars were controlling conflicts for their own purposes. They engineered times of peace and times of war to control the masses and advance their own goals. Outside of certain groups (meaning, those closely associated with the assassins), all major conflicts were grounded in their own desires.

I see little to no reason why the American Revolution should be the same. Hell, you don't even need to make the biggest names from history Templars to make that work. It's perfectly feasible for George Washington just to be some planter from Virginia who believed in (what he thought was) the cause. They could even have set King George up as a Templar who betrayed the rest and, as a result, his power needed to be vastly reduced or something.

I could more easily see the French Revolution as being outside the Templar's plans, because that was an uprising that actually shocked the world. I would have written it with Louis XVI as a Templar, the people rebel (a central theme of the series being that people CAN choose their own path), establishing the Girondin. Templars gain control of the situation through the creation of the Jacobin party (and certain Jacobins, like freakin' Jean-Paul Marat, are already perfect assassination scenarios). The Terror eventually ends when Robespierre, and his templar puppet-master Saint-Just, are both put to death along with other leading Templars.

That's a great story. It has no specific political leaning--the monarchy fractures and its the fight between two powers for a new social order (the AR is between a new social order and the status quo). There are heroes and villains on both sides, it's hopeful in the beginning and turns to tragedy before France is finally liberated. The Catholic Church was completely rejected in the early years of the revolution, and forcibly repressed, which works well with the AC story that it was led by Templars. Etc.

The story I'm hearing of the new game is just too much pandering for my tastes. It almost always seems to be revolutionaries vs. the British. And that just seems stupid to me, from both the perspective of the AC universe and in terms of what constitutes a good story.

Make George Washington an innocent bystander whose trust Connor needs to gain. Do the same for Cornwallis. Make John Adams a Templar and Franklin an assassin ally. Make Hancock an Assassin traitor. Have Connor fight for the Hessians (mercenary group allied with the Assassins?) at Trenton before he can expose the Templars to Washington. Etc.

It would be way more interesting to navigate both sides of the conflict. Writing a story that basically says "The Americans won because Connor helped with all their major victories" is boring as hell.

Maybe I'm not hearing the whole story--it's not like I'm actively seeking out spoilers--but I've heard next to nothing that makes me think this game turned out like I would have hoped.

I agree with Idiggory. I heard American Revolution and my hopes for a fun good game died. It has turned out like I expected. A game made for this generation. No catching story, no unexpected twist. The first spoiler was given in Revelations, just a bit of common sense. The second spoiler was alluded to by the actions taken.

The counter makes you think a bit more rather then just smashing counter-kill. I do like using trees, step in the right direction of including more of the landscape into the gameplay. Aquila is the best part of the entire game. Yes the battles are far to easy when you buy all the ship upgrades but even then it offers me more enjoyment the the game.

My brother beat it, I grew bored with it after the first few days, and said that the game ended lacked compared to the ending for Conner.

Lame. Smiley: frown

Why would they make her death such a cliffhanger if she's just discarded as a "bad guy"? I thought Juno killed her to motivate Desmond to find the answers he needed to find. Now it's just a case of "I know your girlfriend is a double-agent, so I'm going to kill her and not tell you, because drama llama" writing. Lame

According to bestbuy.com, I should get my copy next week. I'll probably have something to add then. My video game backlog has been ridiculous for the last, well, forever. I made it to about sequence 6 in Brotherhood and didn't play it for over a year. I finally picked it back up and beat it the other day. I was going to play Revelations before starting 3 next week but Persona 4 has sucked me in BIG TIME. From what I saw watching my brother playing, it looked like your standard AC game, although prettier. I'm looking forward to playing this game compared to Brotherhood and Revelations. Brotherhood didn't pull me in like 2 did and the trailers really pumped me up, although awesome cutscene battles will typically do that.

This was probably the best trailer I've seen so far this year with the exception of maybe the trailers for Watch Dogs, The Last of Us, and the second GTAV trailer.

I got a free copy with my SSD I purchased last week. Downloading it now. I dislike these standalone downloaders. "Ubisoft Download Manager". It doesn't show it but I'm guessing it's a bittorrent style manager.

Same here, 'cept it came with my graphics card, IIRC.

I'm guessing/hoping one doesn't need to play Revelations to get through it.

PS: Comp parts arrive this Friday/Saturday, hopefully. Soon I should be able to rejoin the rest of you computer snobs with your nice graphics and mods. I think I'll resub to EVE.
