3 Waves ?
# Sep 03 2004 at 7:41 AM Rating: Decent
It does say that it does 3 waves but the damage message only shows 125 damage to each mob only 1 time each. I'm booking this and not using it again. 200 mana for 125 damage is buying a Cubic Zirconium for the price of a real diamond.

Most rain spells have a maximum amount of targets it will hit, period. If you have one mob rooted, it will do 3 waves. With 2 mobs, you get 2 waves, (so 4 total hits). With 3 or more, you only get 1 wave.
The other problem is that mobs have to stay in their initial spot, because once the 1st wave lands, the remaining waves will cast over that spot regardless of whether the mob is still there. These can give decent damage to 1 or 2 stationary mobs but due to the restrictions I rarely use them.
On a side note... rain nukes can sometimes count a pet as a target even though it can't hit it. When grouped with my hubby's necro, if his pet was on the mob at the time, usually only 2 waves would go off (the other 2 "attempting" to hit his pet)
I rarely use this line but it has its perks, it can do a lot of damage quickly when used at the right time :o)

IS this like the lower level AE Ice spells?
# Jun 16 2003 at 4:09 PM Rating: Decent
Its been a while since i used the lower lvl ice AE like Cascade of Hail, but if i recall that spell hit 3 times. I may be wrong but if this spell did the same it would be very worth while.

After reviewing the spell and with the latest patch giving spell info on the spell it does indeed say that it hit in 3 waves of 125 damage.
low damage

Why would I cast this? 125 damage for 200 mana. Do the math Verant, Lightning Strike deals more damage for less mana. It is a waste to me to use more mana for less damage.

This spell is a Rain spell- 3 waves of 125 dmg each on targets within the area effect of the spell. Good for when you have the opportunity to sit back out of range of the spell (group holding the MOBs in place), or (if kiting multiples) you have your targets Snared well enough that they will catch at least 2 if not all three waves of damage.

Also useful as a replacement for Firestrike against single MOBs with high FR- they often have little to no Cold Resistance.

You also have to be aware of the AE radius. Lightning Strike only has a 10 radius, which means, everything has to be REALLY close. I find that if I'm towing 8 or 10 drekkel wolves in GD, a LS will only grab 4 of them, the Avalanche will nail all of them. It's more mana, for less damage, for more targets.

In GD (not the best for cold based spells though), when you get mixed groups of mobs, wolves and frosty giants, you'll find the LS only gets a few at a time, Avalanche is better one the whole cluster for quadding, quinting, sexting, septing and octing...how ever many you are comfortable with.

With LS, you'll find that you'll have to kill half of the mob crew and then kill the other half, this gets them all at once...
Hope this helps.

Try this,

Port to Feerott, run around and hit every spider and spiderling in the zone, and bunch up about 30 of them. Cast this. Loot your 2 stacks or so of spiderling silks.

Or, same in crushbone, with orcs, making sure there are no NPC's nearby

My favorite is to sow a low level helper in a zone with animals, let them run around picking up every animal in the zone as an aggro, run over by me, and then cast this. Wham, a stack of pelts, maybe more, and only one spell cast.

Although u make a good point about the use of this on the spiderlings i find that if u want to farm spiderlings u may end up damaging yourself a lot with this spell where as if you use say tremor or earthquake which i do when farming these little buggers u not only avoid hitting yourself but also have a larger AE range and do more damage for near the same mana as this spell.
It is an AE Spell
