This task begins with Pyrotechnician Flizcog who is located in the Ak'Anon Strike Force camp near the Fortress Mechanotus zone-in.

Be advised, this task has a two-hour time limit.

    You say, 'Hail, Pyrotechnician Flizcog'

Pyrotechnician Flizcog says 'Now if I just add a little bit of powdered crystal. . .yes? Did you want something? I'm busy with this latest explosive. It's delicate stuff and quite dangerous so I would appreciate it if you would stop breathing over my shoulder. Now, if you had any interest in being a [tester] I might have a use for you.'

    You say, 'Tester?'

Pyrotechnician Flizcog says 'I've made a new batch of explosives, but I don't dare set them off here. The best location would be down in the tunnels of the Steam Factory. The damage and chaos they would cause there is frightening. If you'd like to [volunteer] to place these explosives I can tell you the best places to place them.'

    You say, 'I'll volunteer'

Pyrotechnician Flizcog says 'Here's the list of locations then and a bag of Automated Incendiary Device Mark XIVs. You'll want to be quick about it, the explosives are just a tad unstable and I've placed a timer on them to make sure they go off. Make sure you aren't standing near the devices when they go off. Come back and let me know if you need any [more] of the explosives. The clockworks and other workers in the Steam Factory may try and destroy any of the explosives you have set so be quick about it.'

You have been assigned the task 'Destroying the Competition'.

    Receive:

    Automated Incendiary Device Mark XIV
    LORE ITEM NO TRADE
    EXPENDABLE Charges: 10
    Required level of 70.
Effect: Flint Spark (Any Slot, Casting Time: 5.0) at Level 70

    WT: 0.8 Size: TINY

    Race: ALL

Pyrotechnician Flizcog has agreed to supply you with his latest Automated Incendiary Device Mark XIV to test inside the Steam Factory. You will need to set these devices in safe locations in the rooms on Flizcog's list. Be warned though, Flizcog has set a timer on them!

Each stage must be done in order. The Incendiary Device must be clicked very close to each location that you discover as being a "suitable place". Note: The locations are so specific that even being shrunk may impact your ability to do the click.

For the locations, you can update your Steam Factory map with the following text:

    P 253, -1130, 86, 0, 0, 0, 1, foundry
    P 805, -880, 118, 0, 0, 0, 1, engineering_facility

    P 480, 350, 83, 0, 0, 0, 1, storage_room

Find a suitable place to place the explosives in the foundry 0/1 (The Steam Factory)

Place the explosive in the foundry 0/1 (The Steam Factory)

Find a suitable place to place the explosives in the repair facilities 0/1 (The Steam Factory)

Place the explosive in the repair facilities 0/1 (The Steam Factory)

Find a suitable place to place the explosives in the clockwork storage room 0/1 (The Steam Factory)

Find a suitable place to place the explosives in the engineering area 0/1 (The Steam Factory)

Place the explosive in the engineering area 0/1 (The Steam Factory)

Return to Flizcog and inform him of the results 0/1 (Fortress Mechanotus)

    You say, 'Hail, Pyrotechnician Flizcog'

The destruction the explosions caused should be enough to slow down Meldrath's operations for a few days.

Note: There is no map location for this quest, per se. Rather, it seems to be a general area on the map, and once the quest owner is within the update box, the update occurs. Wherever the quest owner is when they receive the update is the location where the explosives should be placed, which is why it's imperative to STOP MOVING IMMEDIATELY upon seeing the update message.

Currently running this (1 toon at a time, as mentioned in other posts) with a bot group consisting of:
    - 87 Mage w/ J1 tank merc
    - 87 Mage
    - 87 Enchanter
    - 90 Ranger w/ J5 cleric merc

The best way I have found to complete is:

    1. Stand a fair distance AWAY from the point marked on the map and kill ALL the mobs in each area (make sure whichever toon has the quest does NOT enter the quest area until all mobs are dead)
    2. Once all mobs are dead, run the toon with the quest into the quest area and IMMEDIATELY stop running when you see the update message.
    3. Once the update message appears and you have stopped running, click the explosives and 100% of the time it should update the quest.

Being shrunk (or small) may cause problems with updates when trying to place an explosive.

I just finished doing those for 3 of my characters, and what I figured out is that only one can do it at a time.

If multiple people in the group have the task, the first one to click the device destroys all the currently spawned invisible triggers for everyone.

Doing it with only one character having the task at a time it was trivally easy, never failed to update. But when all three had the task at once, only the first one to click got the first update, and the other 2 were blocked until they re-got the task.

Kaenneth is correct. I tried this task recently. Had 4 chars run over to the 1st update spot and tried with 3 different characters. They did not get the update. I tried with the 1st char i had run over to get the update and he was the only one able to get the explosive device to work. The others were not able to even though they were standing in the exact same spot. EDIT: Read Dissent's post after posting this. I decided to give what he said a try. It made no difference. Ran my shaman over update and then enchanter. Had shaman click. It worked. Moved shaman and others from group well out of the room and tried with enchanter and it did not work. Maybe after a few minutes it might have worked. I didn't bother trying since i only needed to do this task with one character. I did this task a long time ago with my other characters. I remember it being a real pain in the *****

There are quests where you can't get an update if there are mobs nearby. This one, however, all that matters is that you be able to set the fuse, which is a 5-second cast. As a level 87 monk with one rank of Concentration (Melee AA to resist interrupts on clickies) I was able to click it with 3 mobs beating on me. The last room got a bit dicey but I managed to get the click at last and ran back to the hall to FD.

For those of you who can't get the second update (the explosive), get the rest of your group to move. :) It will work if you are the only person standing on the update loc. I guess they don't want you to explode your group!

    1. Hands down this is THE hardest of the tasks for the SoF Face Aug, be prepared.
    2. I play as a SK, and FD proved invaluable, though I heard of others using a sacrifice to train the mobs away would work also.
    3. The posted locs are correct, but I still had issues for a long time, before realizing I had Lev on, apparently it made the difference for using the device.
    4. If you run out of charges, simply go back and say 'more' to get another device

3 attempts now: i kill all mobs near foundry loc, get the first update at loc, and click away, use up all 10 charges at loc, next to above loc, around loc, and nothing works: cant get the second update. Have done this for 30 charges. bizarre, quest is totally not working for me.

also, the timer is 40 minutes for me. not 2 hours.

    Edited, Aug 18th 2009 2:24am by sneakymomo

Ok, got the second update eventually, then couldnt get the third update at the second location above. The way I got the second update, was to run back to the npc who gives the quest, and get another clicky box to try more. I will experiment with destroying the original box and getting a second as a possible workaround. Still stuck on this.

the 5th loc on this map is incorrect. It is actually at the northern most part of that room. right in front of "a furnace engineer"
to be more exact, there are L pipes at the UD point, right in the middle of them is where you get the UD. hope this helps, GL!

Imo the best way to do this task especially when doing the first loc(foundry) is to train the mobs away. Either by a FD class or a FD class/mage CoH combo or just someone willing to take one for the team maybe in rotation /shrug. Whatever floats your train boat but its alot faster just training the mobs away. Oh accept the 3rd update can be done comp-letely aggro free. Like previous post states just invis and lev up to top of inner door frame and click.

As a druid I was able to solo this by the slow tedious method of snaring one of the mobs that would agro at the clcik loc, invising, running out and away, and then hitting evac. Once each time for each mob that would agro at each click point....so for a couple rooms was really a pain, but doable.

Was mainly trying to learn the event so I could train mobs off to help guildies get this done, but it turned out even the last room it was barely possible to get the mobs locked down long enough to get the click update. The last room seemd like perhaps 10 mobs, so did the snare evac several times, then just rooted the last 3 and did the click.

The first loc was the only really bad one, too many casters. Rest were not too bad at all.

    2nd Task Update
    # Sep 13 2008 at 6:14 AM Rating: Decent
I too am having difficulty getting the update following the emote in the Foundry.
Clicking in the exact spot of the emote doesn't work.
Has anyone a second /loc for this update? Or some clue as to why clicking in the same spot doesn't work?
I notice the item says its more reliable than the Mark XVIII - does this thing fail normally?
    2nd Task Update
    # Sep 14 2008 at 11:18 AM Rating: Decent
Update: All the above /locs are spot on. After having some difficulty in getting the "bomb placement" update, I kept at it anyway and it worked - despite having changed nothing.

As already stated, best strat is:

Get a monk or FD friend to come with you. Walk to /loc to get update and tell your Monk to train the mobs around you, away from you.
Once it's safe, click the box - get update - click invis pot.
Repeat it five times and you win.
You will need shrink to move from loc to loc. And be sure to tell your friend that the mobs have a 5k DD that stuns and "Fake FDs you". In that you fall to the ground but you keep aggro and mobs smash you.

You will need a tough FD class to do this for you. SK FD is aggro/FD is too slow, so I don't recommend going that way.
Monk I had was about 16k hp and 1700 AA, Demi+ gear and he got rocked several times. Lag intensive at times as well.

i was able to get the task at 79 but not the text as to where to trigger the device...wandered around for a while until see invise killed me. the problem i have with sof era is that tasks can be assigned to lower level toons that cant get the gear. for example i have been ally with fangbreakers since level 77 but cant use the emblem until level 80. where is the reward for that?

    Who - Pyrotechnician Flizcog
    Where - Fortress Mechanotus
    Requirements - None
    Phrase - I'll volunteer

You are only given 2 hours to complete this task. When you accept the task you are given a Automated Incendiary Device Mark XIV. At any point you can say "More" to Flizcog to get another Device.

Find a suitable place to place the explosives in the foundation - Steam Factory
Plant a bomb - Steam Factory
Find a suitable place to place the explosives in the repair shop - Steam Factory
Plant a bomb - Steam Factory
Find a suitable place to place the explosives in the storage room - Steam Factory
Plant a bomb - Steam Factory
Find a suitable place to place the explosives in the manufacturing plant - Steam Factory
Plant a bomb - Steam Factory
Find a suitable place to place the explosives in the engineering room - Steam Factory
Plant a bomb - Steam Factory
Return to Flizcog - Fortress Mechanotus

The first point is the foundry, northeat area of the zone. The repair shop is south of foundry with the large conveyor belt. The storage room is more southeast, same place Thickgear can spawn. You can trigger the third step by using lev to scale the doorjam and clicking on top, just be as close to the wall as you can. The manufacturing room is just east of the western zone in. And the engineering room is south west of the Mansion zone line. Add these lines to your Steam Factory map file:
    P 805, -840, 120, 127, 0, 0, 3, DC5
    P -5, -320, 160, 127, 0, 0, 3, DC4
    P 480, 360, 90, 127, 0, 0, 3, DC3
    P 180, -585, 110, 127, 0, 0, 3, DC2
    P 250, -1130, 85, 127, 0, 0, 3, DC1

The triggers don't have much tolerance, so be very close to the trigger spots before using your device.

All information in this post should be ascribed to Rasper's Repository, Thank you.
