G'day,

Yeah they're amazing considering how easy they are, at least to rangers and druids: you can get nearly 16 plats from Starn Bearjumper (no need to go to Halas) from a single mob WOOT !

Snare them, then kite them or fear them with Panic (10 mana can you say chain pulling ?)/ Terrorize Animal and melee them to death.

With a good timing you'll manage to cast a fear spell just before the previous one wears off, which means you can kill a mammoth without ever getting hit at all. For me, a 26 ranger, a blue or white mammoth means about 1 bub of mana and from no health to 1 and a half bubs if it resists many spells. Yellows are slightly tougher so be ready to lose up to half health and a little more mana, but they still can be handled without much problem.

I got to Everfrost at lvl 24 a couple of days ago, and plan to stay here until 33 or 34, well in fact as long as they give me xp )

Take care

As a cleric. From what I have read... It doesnt sound good. It sounds like they have a fairly high resist. So our nukes will not hit in full. Also we can most likely FEAR them, but then they would run rampant at full speed without snare. If you try it, I would not recomend sparing the buffs. BUFF UP. I learned WAY too late in my cleric days how much of an edge there is in that. also from what I have read have divine aura ready just in case. Maybe "fear wave" to get adds off you. The only GOOD point is since it seems everyone else and their mother can solo em, most will not WANT a partner... but they might want a cleric ;)

I actually managed to solo one of these as a 23 cleric, but I had SoW and a lot of shaman buffs. Still it was way too close for comfort.. had to run real close to guards and after the fight i had about 1 bub of health and no mana.

Yesterday I was soloing these (lvl 28 now) pretty well. Had sow and had to run around while gaining the mana for one last nuke once. Still a lot of downtime. I'm sure if you work out a good strategy you could start soloing at 26 or so. Problem is our nukes often don't do full damage. Still so at lvl 28.

I've been killing these from 21 or so with a shaman partner of equal level and I've tried to do so with a warrior too. Shaman was much better for a partner. Annoying that from 25-26 he can solo these real good though.. :)

Hoping that when i get wrath at 29 I'll be much more capable of soloing these. I'll know in a day or two..
RE: solo cleric
# Mar 07 2002 at 12:07 PM Rating: Decent
I got to try it as a lvl 29 cleric the same day as I wrote the above.

Just as I had hoped they were pretty easy kills at 29. Like night and day compared to 28. Root and 3 x wrath and maybe one smite and they run (if your root still isn't holding that is). That's 495-565 mana, assuming you need to cast root twice. 3 bubbles for me.

At 29 the exp bar still makes quite a jump if you kill one of these, seen it go more than a half blue for one kill.

These thing are relatively easy to take down, for there level, but Clerics are probably one of the worst solo'ers in the game, so try it out, if you succead Grats, if not...go back to what you were doing before

I hunted these lvl 25-29 with my Erudite mage, made almost 2k plat:) Tusks sell for about 7-9 plat to merchants. I found I got better prices in Halas than the merchants outide. The tusks weigh a lot so dimensional pockets help big time, I'd load up 4 pockets (16 tusks) then sell in bulk to merchants near the bank.

I was indifferent to all Orcs except the Icy's so could med in the zone traffic, only interrupts being from those pesky snow leapords and the occasional ice bone skelly, Jabober made quick work of them. Just med on a hill top with a good field of view with your volume up, if a mammonth is moving near you'll hear it and Flame Bolt has a long range, pick the right spot and I guarantee you'll get as many as someone with track who gets attacked by orcs when they med. Oh and kill the giant wooly spiders as they seem to make the mammoths spawn more often.

Tactics are normal, send pet in and nuke but watch out for the huge hit range the mammoths have if you sit down to med in a fight. A great place for loot with decent xp and I only wish I'd come here earlier.

# Oct 28 2001 at 10:38 AM Rating: Excellent
I've been reading the post on this site for some time and most of the attack methods tend to get me killed. But the "Snare-Fear" method for Rangers worked like a charm. When I hit lvl 22 I headed to Everfrost and successfully soloed mammoths and wooly mammoths (all coned red). I must admit I was left with only a bubble of health but the loot (I also make mammoth sandwiches)and xp are well worth the "fight to the finnish" mentality.

Hello Vinrea, I just saw this post and think you can take them. If i could atek them as a 24 warrior with only 1 bulb hp gone non buffed, you should be able to take them. They will be mostly yellow and red but they are not as hard as they look. Just group with 1 person to tank, such as a warrior ranger, or etc, at lvl 23 or whatever around there. You will wipe them up with your bare hands! KICK AZZ VINREA!

First, you use to many exclamation marks !!! Second, stategy is spelled with a "g" not a "d" You follow that up by exclaiming that "u" must be smart....I don't know about your soloing, but if I were to rate "u" on your grammar I would give you a 3.

Curious about how plentiful these are. Mage is level 18 now and thinking of coming here to hunt in my low 20's but it looks like these would be the only things in that lvl range worth hunting so just wondering of it's worth the trouble of trecking across country to hunt here or if I'd be sooo bored I'd just leave.

Thanks

Well, whenever I was soloing for calves I had to pass-up about 75% of them because their friggin' moms were protecting them. They are pretty common and great to hunt. I would suggest getting a group or at least a partner. Also, when you hunt, don't sit in one place. Run around and listen for their stomping (loud and scary to a little gnome). Hope that helps.

My wizard solo these at 20 with a 50% kill rate,
By 50% I mean i killed 50% the guard killed the rest. A mammoth never killed me unless i went ld or when i grouped with a bunch of melee type that could not hit or taunt and i outdamaged the 4 of them by 3 to 1, I learned then that the tank need to be higher than me.
When you get resist, and trust me you will, run to snowflake cause the mammoth will kill you before bandl will kill it, thus run to snowflake where their are 3 guards that will mow it down before you lose a red or any hp.

At 20 force shock bites, just pisses them off more and seem like I was hit for more. Stick to lighting bolt and make sure you have sow.
If you do not have sow as a wizard, don't even try mammoths because they have a high resist or will break root before you can even begin to cast your first damage spell.

I used straight Nuke spells for this mob as the sooner they are dead the better, because while kitting they can and will call others to help and like all mobs when they have a friend the will attack you until they are dead. They will not run off like they do when they are singled out, 2 mammoths or even a mammoth and a calf will attack you until you, or they are dead. Also another plus when you have 2, the resist seem to be higher too and damage is less cause the other sometime gets in the way and diffuses the spell damage amount.

If you do get two of them, kite them until you kill or run out of mana, then run the remaining one or if unlucky two to snowflake, if you have 2 running to snowflake is a must and i would even suggest running past the last guard at snowflake with 2 and be prepared to get beat, I kited 3 once killed the one that i had and ran the 2 remain to snowflake and kept running until i had no target.

THis is just forwhen you are a lvl 20 wizard at 21 and 22 they get much easier and the force shock started to do damage but the fail rate was still high, would just stick with the lightning bolt. also at 21 and 22 root starts to work longer then 3 seconds or soo

last bit of advice if you see an ice giant pull your kite away from them. ice giants will hit anything that is attacking something even if you are not attacking them, and they hit wizards for 117hp a shot and sometimes they get of 2 at once, which makes the double 50 hits from the mammoths look like childs play

AS a mage i soloed these from 21-26 decent exp and great loot as tusk sell for around 8pp. I easilt made over a 1kpp and bough some nice stuff. Although fighting at night in RL seems to be overcrowded. Rangers and druids are liked for ability to track which really helps. I tend to grp with one just to get more pulls. If these mammas seem to become to easy theres always a tainted mammoth spawn which leads to a corrupt which are around lvl 30. All around good for loot i find SK better for exp.

If he's a shaman have him dot the heck outa it and sit and med. Then you should be ok to tank it and he'll be able to heal as necessary. If it doesn't work, at least you tried.

Regular Wooly Mammoths drop ribs (for shaman totemic armor) and tusks. The tusks sell for 6-10pp depending on your factions/charisma. Occasionally there is a Tainted Wooly Mammoth. IF you kill this particular mammoth, EXACTLY where the corpse of the tainted is, at the exact moment of the tainted's death, a Corrupted Wooly Mammoth will spawn. This mammoth drops a "chunk of tundra". This item is used for the Druid epic quest for the Nature Walker's Scimitar. (Not sure but it's possible it's for something for the ranger epic.)

Also of note, if you are hunting these beasties, and you can't seem to find any... Start killing Giant Wooly Spiders. Wooly Mammoths and Giant Wooly Spiders both share the same spawn table. That is, if you kill a bunch of one, the other will most likely start to spawn.
