Sontalak

Raid Encounter

  • Class: Warrior
  • Enrages: Yes
  • The guardian of the Temple of Veeshan, this mighty dragon is a formidable foe.

You say, 'Hail, Sontalak'

Sontalak says, 'Why are you here, Human? There is nothing you can gain from this land but an unsung death at the talons of your betters. If you want to prove your worth to Dragonkind, it will take more than slaying a few giants to accomplish it. Far more.'

You say, 'Prove my worth'

Sontalak says, 'Slaying all the Kromzek would be a good start. But that may be asking too much of such weak creatures.'

You say, 'The king is dead'

Sontalak says, 'Yes, morsel? You mean to tell me you have accomplished the task I set before you? Then it is proof I shall be having, or it is lunch I shall be having, do you understand?'

Woot!
Chosen of Norrath did this tonight on Lanys server. We had 4 grp's with an average lvl of 64. Not real easy but not as hard as we all thought. We used the tactics shown here, wiped the first time at 10%, and went at him again to take him down. he dropped only spells and the taisman =( but all in all still worth it if your guild is going to try for ST. Next time maybe we will get a BP to drop...

Sontalak can be evaded even while naked as a 65 shaman... Details below.

I died in a ToV raid and had to run back naked to have my corpse summoned. Taking the long route running, I went from PoK to GD, EW, Kael, WL, SS, CS, SG, and WW to get to ToV.

While self buffed, I have 2044 HPs and a little under 600AC.

In SG, I just invis'd by the first mob, stood on the ledge out of the LoS of that first mob, and summoned a pet. I shrunk myself to get more room for the swim through the tunnel. Jumped in and sicked the pet seahorse on the right, which was guarding the tunnel, and hugged the left wall all the way through. Made it out of the water w/o taking any dmg and ran the rest of the way after becoming invisible.

In WW, I ran up to the ramp right before Sontalak and summoned a pet. I then rearranged my buffs so that SoW was the last slot and memorized Spirit of Cheetah. I read on this thread that you could run by him by levitating over his head, so I decided to try it. I ran out and to the west, up the slope, and got into position at the top of the "Scar" to float across. Spirit of Cheetah was taking much too much time to get ready, so I used Spirit of Scale instead. I ran past and I aggro'd Sontalak, but I didn't get hit by his fire AE. Instead, he melee'd me for a round with a flurry (total of 7 attacks) and dispelled 4 buffs off of me. I had 804/1350 when I zoned into ToV.
easy
# Jan 14 2004 at 6:34 PM Rating: Decent
One group of 6 rangers killed him on Prexus, then a couple months later he was killed by a single group of monks. No outside heals or help or anything.

Guild that did it was Nameless Order.

Later reports say the rangers went down on a dirty gnome after the fight. The result of constant fighting over who would do him..

Sont IMO
# Oct 14 2003 at 7:52 PM Rating: Good
In my opinion Sont is pretty easy. Granted i have only been on a few Sont raids...but hey
Sont has very low hps for his calibur of a dragon. What i think needs to be done is this...
Have everyone gather/buff at the ToV zone. 4-6 junk buffs with 2 instaclicks. Have most important ones last and so on. When you are ready have everyone sneak up, but not into agro range. Have MA agro him so he turns and AE taunt/defensive disc to grab agro. He does not hit especially hard, but need to have a decent CH rotation on him. Because of his AoE/Dispell thing make sure that there is a druid/pally someone not slowing or in the rotation that is healing the group and people that are in the rotation. make sure you keep you CH clerics alive!! Also slow him as often as you can because of his self dispell. Lay in heavy with the nukes and he will be dead in no time. 100k hps is a very low amount and 400 melee dmg is also low. BUT his loot compinsates for this. His BP's are decent, but rarely drop. the spells are nice, but the main reason he is killed is for ST keys (his talisman). Hope this helps when thinking of trying him. Oh...make sure you bring a bard. Dragon fear is not hard to resist, but it can be very bad if MA/healers/debuffers/slowers are feared. Another thing, dont give up. If it looks like you are gonna wipe and you only have paper tanks left. You can most likely kill him before he kills you if you have enough dps.
1 group ate him
# Oct 06 2003 at 4:03 PM Rating: Decent
Well today i seen one group of druids and 2 chanters eat him =/. Yes EAT HIM! It seemed like it was nothin to them at all. A druid attked it and stuck pet on him and so did the rest. Charm broke on all the charmed mobs at least once but they said it was fairly easy =)........
Sleeper's Tomb Key
# Jul 30 2003 at 2:53 AM Rating: Default
If you needed to get 40 people their Sleeper's Tomb key, would you need to kill this guy 40 times? Does he drop more than one talisman or do you just need one key per group to get in?

We are about to start on this quest if it is worthwhile, meaning that we don't have to kill every dragon 40 times.
RE: Sleeper's Tomb Key
# Aug 12 2003 at 7:22 PM Rating: Default
Not necessarily sont 40 times but yes 40 first brood dragons, each drops one talisman per time. Takes a while to farm, just got to catch them all up, you can get Sont about every 2 days then you have to watch for the 4 others. There's also the one off Tmax and rarely off vindi/velk.

COUld?

COuld a guild raid of 30 pull this guy off? or suicide to try?
RE: COUld?
# Jun 10 2003 at 10:30 AM Rating: Decent
If your guild is made up of others of similar level as yours, I would think you would need many more members than 30. If your raid average level is higher, your equipment decent, you have a good mix of classes, then you can do it with less. I saw a link where 6 rangers claim to have taken him down. I tend to believe them. I am sure they were all 65 with many AA points and quality equipment.

On our server, he tends to stay up awhile before he is taken down. If your guild likes to try new encounters, even if they fail, I suggest you read up on his tactics and give him a try. You will quickly learn where you stand against this guy.

6 rangers all with AM3 and EQ took this guy down. I imagine they all had elemental bows as well.

# Jul 10 2003 at 5:22 PM Rating: Decent
Aye, actually, they used 3 rangers dropping /disc weaponshield and 3 using /disc trueshot...

Also it took 3 tries over 5 weeks to pull it off.. Regardless, was a well coordianted effort, and grats out to them.
run

they nerfed his aggro range bug, so now if u wanna get past him and ur not a pali/cleric and cant make urself invun i found i just barly made it past with 6k hp and wolf form as my last buff, he aoes alot. but isnt that hard if u dont lose ur sow/soe/wolf. i just made it, to bad for the group of people who didnt pay attention to me shouting about a train to ToV ent...
AE Can be resisted

Guild dropped Sont on 02-12-03 and with almost 300 in Fire Resist, I was getting hit for about half of the Max. Think max is 650. I was never feared during the fight.
#REDACTED, Posted: Feb 10 2003 at 12:15 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Trewayn on drinal reputedly is the only person in eq history to have managed to solo him! big solo ;p
#REDACTED, Posted: Mar 30 2003 at 4:39 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Only way to solo him is by using a lame exploit.
Tough one
# Jan 28 2003 at 8:16 AM Rating: Decent
Very tough, we wiped once before killing him. Try it this way, have at least 4 junk buffs up, a bard is a must. We used pets. Let MT grab some agro then all of our casters bum rushed the belly and just chain nuked. Entire fight lasted just one minute 13 seconds. He resists a lot so I used nukes that cast quickly rather than big nukes. DPS is the key, you want to kill him fast, the longer you fight the more AE damage you are going to eat.

If your guild is headed to ToV and is KoS, then they are capable of killing him, why not just smoke him? :)

A few weeks ago (maybe a month) my guild had a ToV Raid, Sont was up and it was a WToV raid (most people were kos) lots of people got CoHed but those that didnt, myself included ran past him, i stayed on the left wall within a gnome length between myself and him and didnt get aggro, must be a blind spot ;p
RE: Running By
# Nov 30 2002 at 9:32 PM Rating: Decent
He was probably harmonied. You can also levitate above his head and not get aggro. I tried the new enchanter harmony on him and he aggroed before I got close enough.

WTF!
# Aug 18 2002 at 1:59 PM Rating: Default
Tried this 3 times on Saturday and OMG is he hard! We got him down to 40% health before wipe out. His 650 AE is unresistable. Casters cant hide behind walls to block AE DD etc, his AE hits where ever you are. Definately not worth reward as there's mobs like Trakanon, who is 10 times easier, who drops far better bps than these.
RE: WTF!
# Aug 24 2002 at 8:04 PM Rating: Good
You do not drop Sontalak for BP's. You drop him for 2 main reasons:

1. He exists (and is a good benchmark for your guilds capabilities)

2. He drops a Talisman for the Sleepers Tomb key. For guilds to advance, Primal weapons are a huge bonus (very good stats and they proc Avatar on the weilder) and the only place to get them is in Sleepers Tomb.

btw, the BPs that Trak drops are not that great either. SS or Kael BPs are the way to go if your guild can take down Trak.
