Come to find out most weapons like that are the same way. Normally you need to find out where to throw it. If you weren't targeting something then you can throw it for no reason and it wont hit anything. Your best bet would to be to use a crappy hammer and see if the range even works for you. Other than that I dont know what to say. I hope I was of some help.

So these 2 very old quotes make the case for some modern user input:
Looking back at some old items, there must have been a change in intention (or a mistake) with quite a few hammers being originally tagged as range slot (as shown for this item in the old item UI pic we have).
So, a modern item window pic would be a nice addition to the site.
Also, what does this item look like when equipped?
