My only thoughts are that it is a cool usage of the name corruption, guessing that this probably drops off a huge thunder serpent. I personally see no problem with using real world mythology, since when they use Elves, Dwarves etc, I might add that they were originated in real world mythology, and refined in Tolkein's mythology, which is very convincable of being a real world mythology, read The Silmarillion :) Just a thought anyhoo.
Ancient central American indian gods... VI is going nuts looking for inspiriation here. Yes, I know the spelling is different, but the similarity is obvious.
The winged serpent, seems appropriate for something from Air, but then I haven't seen the mo so what do I know. At least it's not Prince Charles of Chardok again...
VI does not run Everquest anymore, they were bought out by Sony Online Entertainment (SoE), SoE took up all design, naming, and quest layouts for PoP, not VI. Also, it doesn't really matter if they do make up a name similiar to the Aztec god of the sun (A large serpent by the name of Quetzocoatl (Probably not exact spelling)) because both VI and SoE have come up with thousands of other names and possibly millions of plots, sub-plots, quests, and storylines (While occaisionally the game does not follow a storyline) that are all original and have provided millions upon millions of entertaining hours for millions more people around the world. So you really can't complain =P
