Ruins of Kunark
I took my 40 Iksar Monk to Kaesora and I got this shield after being there less than an hour. I was soloing and had killed maybe 5 spec guardians when this dropped. I got lost and killed shortly after and I decided to take my 48 Necro there to see if he could clear the Library Area where my Monk died so I could then log the Monk and retrieve my corpse.
I was only there about 10 minutes and had only killed a few mobs when this dropped again for my Necro. Unfortunately, I had one in my Necro's bank from many levels ago and could not loot it because it is lore.
So I think this is a common drop in Kaesora. Or maybe I just got very lucky - twice.

This dropped for me tonight 8/15/03 while camping Xalgoz. 27hrs into the camp, this dropped of a spectral guardian in the church basement. Has that transparent pulsating look to it, white. Very nice.

Just dropped today near Xalgoz. I have been here for days camping and this is the first one I have seen in the church area.

I have spent levels 37-43 here, SOLOING. But the only spot that I have found that this can be done is down that one-way shaft to the backside of the Library. You have to use invis to undead, and u will take around 235 damage from the fall. Drop down, and you will be the end of a hall. There are 3 mobs that roam and some times may be 2 in that hall at one time, so just wait with invis until they move and at the other end of that hall is a room with 3 spawns. That room will have 2 door ways, one is open and one is closed. I do not recommend you going though the one closed and trying down that path alone. The other door will lead to the library. If all clear make pet and wait for one or 2 of the roamers to come to you. After you haven killed at least 1 and mana is good. Park pet, and go easy to the other end. If you easy your way out of the door you can pull just 1, try and pull him as far back to the other end. Once he is dead repeat till room is clear. There are around 6-8 spawns with in that area that you can pull, just Slow em and dot. Make sure you have FD loaded, just in case things go bad =). I left here last night when I dinged 43, they started getting Light Blue to me. I have been here for a couple of days. I have seen 5 of the 25% wr bags drop, 3 of these shields and FS staff's.
First off, Kaesora's not a soloing dungeon. Few are. Secondly, I'd HIGHLY recommend not setting foot in this dungeon as a necro (unless you're Iksar) since it's all on Venril Sathir faction. If you don't know what that is, it's the same faction as the outpost in Overthere and the only friendly town any non-Iksar necro is likely to have in Kunark. It's total crap that some great necro drops (this, the Staff of the Dreaded Gaze and Spirit Tome to name just a few) in Kunark come from this high-xp yielding, all undead zone that necros can't enter...but that's Verant's sick way of doing things.

I think you are wrong about the faction hits. neither the undead nor Xalgoz give faction hits, so it is very possible to hunt here without ruining your outpost faction. It is, however, necessary to invis past the spiders. The spiders give VS faction hits. That said, the other advice in the post is sound; stay out of here at level 36 unless you have a solid group.

You will get VS faction hits if you kill near xalgoz I was there today and was getting negative VS faction on all undead I killed.
You're absolutely right. Also, concerning soloing... my good friend took his 49 necro there and I joined him. My necro was only 20th or so at the time, so I just watched. He solo'd the library without any hassle. Got a Spirit Tome and DR pack for me, in fact. He simply pulled solo's or 2 at a time to the tunnel south of the library. Occasionally dealing with pops in the room behind us. His pet made short work of everything he pulled over. It was great fun to watch... anyway, losing my purpose here.
So, to close, yes soloing is possible if you're near 50 and up. You must know the zone and how to control mobs, but it can be done.
Forgive me for not remembering more specifics as it was about a year ago... haven't been back since but I'm planning to tonight with my rogue... wish me luck!

Wow, last night myself and 4 others went into Kaesora to get a coin at the library and a few fangs for the HS key quest. In 2 hours, we scored both a Strathbone Shell Shield and a Shield of Spectral Essence. I guess, overall it was a good night. =)

This shield dropped after about 3hrs here.
We (group of 6) were not looking for anything in particual, went to help out a friend get his coin and decided to stay. Overall a great night, 1 shield ..as mentioned above, 4 fangs (for howling stone keys )1 Cyrptrobbers knife (Rog only) off a spider, the bard coin, 5 25% red packs, 200pp cash + loot and of course xp. I would highly recommend this place if you can get here and have a druid/wiz for evac just in case things get nasty..

Can confirm positively that this was still dropping at the church within the last month. Guild group was there killing for Xalgoz's fangs (only 2 the whole night :( ) and managed to get one shield, 3 tombcarvers, and enough dusty ransackers that we had dump the ones we were carring to clean up the mess on the floor.
As to the price - I'd say its well worth it given how rare anything out of Kaesora is seen on the market. Besides a decent boost to dexterity and intelligence its basically a Shiny Brass shield with no wieght (helps if your not a dumb orge with his brains in his biceps) and a good look. Now I just need a lightsaber and some I'll be set to go forth and enforce the will of the Emporer in style.

To clear up confusion:
This item dropped for me, from a spectral guardian, when I cleared everything in and around the library for about 3 hours.
The library.
My guild cleared in and around the church for 6 hours for Xalgoz fangs, we never saw this shield drop.
Never saw the shield drop at the church, which doesn't prove it can't drop there, but...

It does drop at the library. My group got one last night after about about 4 hours of experience hunting. Too bad none of us were SKs or Necros. :-)

This item does drop at the church area. I have been there when one dropped while my group was loading up on books. I would say that it's a random drop of the guardians, but with a greater chance in the church area due to the fact of more being there.

I can't believe this thing sells for 5k--loads of better stuffs for necros, and basically the same stats as mm shield for a sk, plus 6int. Its just crazy to pay that much more for the shimmering orb look and 6 int

It drops at the church...not the library. You've got to perpetually kill all of Xalgoz's buddies (and Xalgoz himself or he'll get in the way) and you'll eventually get one. It took me about 7 hours. That's not bad for a 5K item.

Here's your problem guys...it doesn't drop at the library. It drops at the church. Just keep pulling everyone around Xalgoz (and Xalgoz himself for the fun of it) and it will eventually drop. It's pretty uncommon. It took me 7 hours and around 12 complete respawns to get one. I think for 5K a shield it's worth it though.

Been camping the Temple for 17 hours and now luck. Have killed almost 300 specs and gotten 4 tombcarvers and 50 packs plus some jewewlery. I camped the libaray 15 hours and didn't even so much as get a dusty ransacker.

Does this drop off of spectral guardians, guardians of Xalgoz, or both? Where is the best place for a 50 necro to kill these creatures? I've been trying the library with no luck, even after 30 of both mobs.

I have camped whats his face for many hours on several days to get my key for howling stones. We have killed many spectral guardians, and the other guardians, after about 15 total camp hours, we have yet to see a shield of spectral essence.
Heck, I cant even find anyone selling one in the auctions.
So if anyone at all seen this shield drop this year please let me know where at in Kaesora.

I have camped the library many times for lots of people. Last time I was there I killed a normal spectral guardian and got the shield.
