Classes: The Cleric

Clerics -- the premier healer in the game. A popular class for any group, the cleric brings the ability to heal the party and keep you from dying, and can even bring you back from death at higher levels.

What is the best way to play a cleric? Can a cleric be soloed, and if so how? How should you play a cleric in a group? What spells are the best ones to buy and develop? what skills should a cleric concentrate on? What items should you seek out?

Post your strategies on how to best play and develop the Cleric and read, rate and comment on what others have to say.

First, fix the link. I had to cut and paste it, removing the ][/link] off the end to get it to work.

Second, Give up on the "tanking cleric" idea, it won't work. Yes, in a pinch, you can gear up so you can take a hit or two, but you will NEVER be an effective tank.

Focus primarily on getting your mana pool up, getting mana regen, and getting the important focus effects.

Obviously, the easiest upgrade to identify is your head slot. Magnetic is a nice upgrade. Same for the gauntlets.

Replace one of your earrings with a solstice earring. You need mana regen. I would replace the boots with ornate, as they have mana preservation 4 as an effect, however, since you already have MP3 in back slot, thats not a big priority. You could go with boots of slaughter, or magnetic for now. I would also get ornate for both wrist slots, for an additional mana regen 4. The runed mithril bracer should obviously be replaced first. Girdle of Mithaniel is a nice upgrade for your waist. If that's too pricy, even magnetic would be better. A ring of thunderous spirit would be a nice upgrade for the bloody ancille's ring, and the thunderous spirit rings are usually pretty cheap.

Just a few suggestions. Click on my name to check out my cleric's gear, to get an idea what you can gear a cleric up like without raiding.

If you are going to tank you will need to get some haste. Go to the Bazaar and see what is available, but be warned haste is not cheap! Also use Elixir of Speed to quicken your attack. Obviously you are going to use your Hammer of Judgment as your primary weapon, you are also going to need a shield in order to bash. I recommend Stormguard armor, with symbol, for your armor up grade. It is cheap and offers a good all round rise in your abilities. Your agility is way to low, look for an augmentation with plus +12 AGI in the Bazaar. The spell Protection of Vie or Ward of Vie is often overlooked, but you will need it to mitigate the damage that is coming your way. Yaulp V is your best friend. Don’t let others discourage from melee combat. If you want to tank more power to you just remember you will never be as skilled as a warrior. Most important, you can not tank and perform your duties as a cleric. A group needs a dedicated healer, if you try and do both you are going to get someone killed and perpetuate the myth that clerics can’t tank.

If you are going to stand up and hit alot you will need a large mana pool and excellent mana regen. If you don't have those things then you are only hurting your group. They will need healing. Later on the yaulps allow you to regen mana while standing and fighting as well as your sheild spell. Having the extended enhancements help too. Means your hots last alot longer. Once those are taken care of you will need good armor with AC, Dex, AGI etc. Make sure to get that def up too! But really, you need the basics first such as good mana pool and mana regen. Remember to put aa's in increasing your wis cap too when you get to the proper levels. Sucks having lots of wis to only have it capped.

heh

i love when people say clerics can't tank

/boggle

they should say it more like WE ARE NOT RAID TANKS, but to say we can't tank is just wrong.

i am aware, before someone points it out, that my gear is a little above "average" clerics. HOWEVER i was tanking long before i got the gear i have now.

and with the new ac caps changed, i tank even better, only exp "camps" (poular ones anyway) that i don't attemt to tank (yet) is MPG and RSS. but i can tank WoS, RCoD, Creator DoN with ease.

but anway.......

I am a "Battle Cleric", while this worked great up untill the high 50's, I still get into the mix when I have a tank that can stand up to the damage. Don't lvl to say 40, or 50, and say one day, I'm tired of sitting and healing, I think I'm gona be a battle cleric, you'll get your **** handed to you. You have to work your skills up as you level, bash, dodge, etc. You will NEVER have the damage mitigation of a tank, but it helps. I had to retire to the traditional roll of cleric (sit and heal) as I progressed to WOS and above, I am often stealing agro on perpose from the tank, in BOT and such just to mess around and agravate my tank (a friend). I took my time leveling, by gettina 130 AA's before I hit lvl 67 so I could play tank in bot and lower planes lvl's. Tanking BOT was cake last time I was there (around lvl 65), but you have to be willing to set your toon up for it. Spend the time to get good gear, and to get the AA's to help you take damage, but you HAVE to remember, if you want to group, your first priority is to take care of your group. Get your mana, and healing abilities up. Don't expect to tank WOS or higher untill your lvl 70 with hundreds of AA's and Uber gear. I last as a lvl 68, 140 AA's, about 3 or 4 hits in MPG.
