OK, I am a level 42 necro and my brother is a level 41 mag. We are argueing what class is better.what do you think is better all around so i can finally shut him up?

As someone who plays a mage and a necro I have come to this conclusion. Necros are great for soloing, and have some uses in raids/groups. Magi are great for grouping and make wonderful vending machines. I enjoy playing both, but I made the necro for those times when a group just isnt around. It really is based off of your play style, and personal preferance on what is better. Though in a duel without dots, I'm sure the necro would win thanks to the taps, just dont underestimate the use of the air pet.

I think the mages DD spells would out a necro's Lifetaps for damage, meaning the necro would be close to death if not be dead first. My question is what necro joins a duel that won't allow DoT's. I wouldn't.

not really if u count AAs and gear is important in a duel if a necro could use dots necro could win and the DDs if the necro has healing AA and all his advance DD aas then he could my bros necro nukes for 4-5k a nuke some times plus some times he get a compelete heal off of his taps from AAs

In my opinion, i think a necro is better then a mage. Even though mages have the best pets, a necro would still be able to burn down the mage with DoTs easily, and what good is a pet if he is rooted? Without DoTs i think the necro would still pull through, but by a much slimmer margin. AA's would affect how well you do, and so would focus effects. but, because the lifetap line not only does ok damage, it also heals you, ultimately leading to the necro winning.

+ mages are like poo wizzies without pets(in combat situations) necros can still solo pretty well without them

I play a necro (Tirnanog) and have to say both are fun and involving. Necro DPS can easily match a mag when taken over time, Nuke for Nuke the mage wins, but a necro should be laying on 2 - 3 DoT's then topping it up with a couple of nukes. Having both in the same group is fun and here is where necro DPS drops a little as now the Necro starts to play a supporting roll by keeping mana up and sustaining the mag dps. You could argue that mag dps is better when grouped with a necro but the necro is responsible for part of that dps.

I tend to find the mag goes down with the rest of the group while the the necro wins the fight with a combination of tap fd tanking and WTD / Archer pets to take agro. Then I rez the group and off we go again. I dont think there is a best class between necro and mag.

OK I would think the question would best be answered on a normal non-PVP context, as in, which is better in a normal game setting? (Unless you're on a PVP server). I have a 55 magi and a 30 necro, and I can tell you right now the necro is a better soloer, because with fear kiting your pet doesn't have to be as tough- a mage is much more limited in what it can take on, too tough a mob will make a speedbump of the pet. Of course too tough a mob will mean the necro won't be able to fear the mob either, but there seems to be more latitude there with the necro. A mage's nukes just won't land on a really tough mob either, and I tend to think DOTs will land more readily on tough mobs. I can say my necro is a much more flexible character, at least at 30, he can fear, ghetto-mezz, give mana to others, heal a bit, all sorts of stuff. I don't know what all a necro can do at higher levels, but at 30 my necro is more well-rounded than my mage was.
BUT- and this may be just me- I find the necro to be MUCH harder to play. I really gotta concentrate, especially if I'm fear kiting. My main is a pally, and (believe it or not) he's much more difficult to play than a magician. My magician is relaxing, /assist, send in the pet, malo, nuke. Not hard. I've never seen this mentioned in a mage vs. necro board, not sure if others find this to be true.
At higher levels everyone has their preferences. I think I'd rather have a necro when going against really tough mobs, as in a raid setting, but in a exp grind group, probly a mage. Kinda like the pally vs. warrior scenario, come to think of it. Anyway babbling now hope this helps.

imo, necros far out do mages in almost every situation, we can split a camp, kite or fear kite, and our pets can out tank a mage pet due to the reason that we can crit heal our pet, i heal my pet for 4k all the time (healing focus) mages cant crit heal or heal them selves, maybe they can every 2 minutes with the new right click potions, but thats a long time to wait to be healed. pvp: in pvp the mage pet can be a big pain because it stuns alot and interupts, but focus on the mage himself they die fast (ie no heals lol) pet focus your pet on the mage and kite the mage pet if you want, or pet mez his pet so you can burn the mage, i duel my 70 mage friend all the time and whoop him.

At higher level, the necromancer will own mages in duels, especially at end game, because of resist mods on the mage's nukes. Mages nukes have an awful resist mod, making it very hard to land them on a person with over 200 resists, while many of necro dots will land no problem. Lifetap will land much of the time, even against maxed out resists. As for healing our pets, Mages can heal there's much better than we can... but we don't need to. Looking at mage's best pet heal: 1645 about every 5 seconds compared to ours: 1645 about every 5.5 seconds. Not a big difference, but mage's pet can tank MUCH better than ours. Their level 70 Earth pet can get up to over 10k hp buffed, necro pet isn't even close to that. Mage's have our pets beat in every scenario, just how it is.

I have a 70 mage and necro.

In my opinion, I feel the necromancer is better. Ignoring AA's and gear, if you strip it down to the bare minimum, A necromancer can solo better due to the utility spells such as snare, fear, root, lifetaps to heal, and in the event of a bad pull/emergency, they have feign death, harmshield, shadowstep, and if really necessary, gate. The mage has nothing to save himself except gate, (which can be very inconvienient). In groups, necromancers are sought as mindwrackers, snarers, and major DPS.

THE MAGE has it tougher to solo. Sure he can heal his pet and give it a Damage Shield, but if ANYTHING happens to that pet, its all over for the mage. His only chance for survival is zone or gate. However, I think a mage is the best dps in the game as far as groups go. Mobs take damage from the mages pet, the mages ds, and finally, the mage himself. A mage is continous dps unlike a wizard who only dps' if he nukes. The mage has the pets and damage shields working for him. Also, the distribution of pet toys to all the pets increase everyone else's dps and the mod rods keep the casters with mana. A mage is an awesome addition to a group for dps. Plus their ability to summon whatever the party needs to keep them going is really awesome too.

It is funny that you mention your brother is a mage. Mine is too. With us both in the same group, mobs dont stand a chance.
